Taming the Trolls

Decatur Metro | August 13, 2009

It’s become quite obvious in recent weeks that something has to be done about “blog trolls” that occasionally jump on the site to do necessary damage before bolting.

For better or worse, the site has become too popular to continue to leave it completely unmoderated at all hours of the day.  I catch a lot of stuff quickly, but recently there have been instances where things get through and sit for just long enough to have an impact.  These days it seems like damage can be done in about 30 minutes.

So, here’s my first option.  Instead of making everyone get a WordPress account, I’m going to start by checking this box:

Before a comment appears comment author must have a previously approved comment

UPDATE: Nothing will change for anyone that’s posted before.  But from here on out, when someone posts for the first time (or changes their email address) their comment will be sent to moderation for approval.  After that, you’re free to comment as frequently or infrequently as before, provided you don’t type any of the magic words or add two or more links to a comment.  Both of these actions have always sent you to moderation.

Thank you for understanding.

Yogurt Tap is Now Open

Decatur Metro | August 13, 2009

As of 11am this morning, Yogurt Tap is open to the public.

For all those that refuse to believe it without visual evidence, Robert posted a pic of the open doors on Twitter.

The Yogurt Tap website also now has more details, including August’s flavors and toppings.  Flavors for the month include: Original Tart, Green Apple, Raspberry, Pineapple, Mango, and Dark Chocolate.

Toppings look awesome too.  Fresh fruit and Gummy bears!!  :-)

Still No Sugarland For Decatur CD

Decatur Metro | August 13, 2009

Was there ever any doubt that Wal-Mart wouldn’t allow Sugarland’s Kristian Bush to sell CDs directly to Decatur CD?

The star-struck AJC reported yesterday afternoon that Kristian Bush did indeed stop by Decatur’s bluest brick building yesterday afternoon as promised, but didn’t bring any copies of his latest album, Live On the Inside, with him, due to his surprisingly “ironclad” contract with the low price leader.

Sorry Kristian, Wal-Mart doesn’t care about showing goodwill.  You’re not in Decatur anymore.

To play off the publicity, I think Decatur CD should put up a display of “Alternatives to Sugarland” at the front of the store.  Or if they want to be really snarky – and I hope they do – a “Better Than Sugarland” display.

Scooter & SUV Collide at E Ponce & Commerce

Decatur Metro | August 13, 2009

scotter wreck ponce

Andisheh sends in this photo and Julia provides this account:

Right in the intersection of Commerce and Ponce an SUV and a guy on a moped/scooter collided. He was pretty shaken up but the ambulance and cops got there pretty quickly.

On Twitter, Robbie Harris reports that the scooter driver was a 16-year old kid.

I’ll try to find out the scooter rider’s condition. UPDATE: Andisheh reported on Twitter that the scooter driver survived.

What is with this intersection lately?  I wonder if there’s any sort of report that shows the most dangerous intersections in Decatur.    That could be pretty interesting.
