For the money? We are talking about wings, right? They’re going to be about the same amount anywhere you go, from the overrated, not “real Buffalo” wings at Taco, er T.Mac Sports Grill, to the awesome, best in Atlanta smoked wings at Fox Bros and Big Tex.
Of course, there are also Mighty Wings at McDonalds…
And if we want to talk about “for the money”, that will surely be very soon at my house, on our new large Big Green Egg
when’s the grill-warming party? and what should i bring?
I’m still in the Egg-sperimenting stage right now, but I’m always looking for a big ol’ butt to rub and pull.
[That's pork butts, people. No need to moderate me yet.]
Did you purchase a demo egg from Eggtoberfest?
Nah, we got one as a gift last month. But I’m already thinking that it’d be really nice to also have an XL. Might need to find out when their next event is and how much the demos are. Just not sure that I can afford both the second Egg and the divorce lawyer I would then also need.
Only large Eggs at the Eggtoberfest…and you’ll have to wait until next October for that one.
As long as you’re doing the cooking, I think that would sit well with the wife.
Best of luck with the Egg. It’s a lot of fun.
American deli by far…
Thanks DM! So far my fave Decatur wings have been at Twain’s but I can’t wait to hear everyone’s suggestions.
Atlanta’s Best Wings way outside Decatur’s comfort zone both in distance and economic level. On Hwy 78 in Lilburn.
what the restaurant’s name?
Atlanta’s Best Wings is the name of the place. Sorry that wasn’t clear.
i should have figured based on the capitalization. that’s in my old stomping grounds. might need to try it sometime.
Love that place! I get the garlic parmesean, boneless and he gets the spicy teriyaki, and we split a side of rice- all that for under $10 and we are both full afterwards. Are you sure it’s Lilburn? We stop on our way to, or from, Stone Mtn. and I’m pretty sure it’s Tucker. Unless there are 2 of course.
They have a location at Memorial & Columbia, catty-corner from the Walmart. Love that place.
Which is still, for the most part, pretty much “way outside Decatur’s comfort zone both in distance and economic level”…
I would be interested in hearing J_T elaborate on how Taco Mac’s Buffalo wings are not “real” Buffalo wings. It was always my understanding it was started by some peeps who moved down here from Buffalo in the late ’70s. Additionally, I remember some investigative journalist on the tube who sought out the originator of the whole “Buffalo Wing” concept (in Buffalo), ate his wings and didn’t like ’em. Anybody else remember the wing place in Avondale on the site of the James Joyce pub run by a young Korean couple? My wife and I loved those wings…
They’re not “real” because “real Buffalo wings” are pretty much just fried chicken parts tossed in Frank’s Red Hot sauce and butter. Then you make them hotter by adding more cayenne or habanero. You can have all the fancy flavors and variations you want but your standard wing should be simply that sublime mixture of Frank’s and butter. Taco Mac puts something else in their standard wing sauce that just make it taste off to me somehow. To each his own though. For me, if I’m going to stray from the original recipe, I’ll take my wings extra large, smoked and drowned in the Fox boys spicy bbq sauce.
J_T has the sauce right, but the most common failure for chicken wings is the fry medium.
Yeah, they’re just deep fried, but the oil has to be very fresh. Frying wings gets the medium dirty quickly, and changing out the oil is a miserable, expensive job.
This is why people argue about good wing joints so much. You can go to some crappy place that just happened to have changed its fryolator that day and the wings will be great. And you can go some place that has a great rep but has had a couple very busy days, and the wings will suck no matter the sauce.
my vote goes to fox brothers. those wings are heaven and worth whatever they want to charge.
Fox Brothers are by far the best. I have even tried to mimic the process myself on the grill, but no cigar.
The smoked wings at Steinbeck’s are delicious.
Hush! Or they might run out leaving me without the best wings in town…
Yup, better than Big Tex’s. Best I’ve ever had, really.
Wing Ranch, 1154 Lawrenceville Hwy, Lawrenceville, GA 30046.
Proprietor grew up in Decatur and graduated from Decatur High.
Wings are outstanding!
Don’t have a particular place in mind but one non-starter for me are those gigantic, hormone enhanced ‘wings’ that end up never being fully cooked. Give me the smallish wings and flats cooked nice and crisp.
That said; Twains and the Wing Joint on college fit the bill.
Wing Joint wings are pretty good. If only they delivered…
Speaking of wings delivered, any thoughts? The only place I know that has good wings and delivers is Urban Pie. Would love to know if I have overlooked an establishment?
Seems like with Taco Mac wings, you either love ‘em or hate ‘em. I happen to love them, AND I love the fact that they have the “six-pack.” Most places do 8 or 10 and I can never finish that many.
First world problems.
Don’t know if this will post or, if it does, if it’ll embed correctly but it appears we may have a contender coming from The Imperial. No vouching for taste at this point but they sure look nice.

Twains and then the jerk wings at Corner Pub
tcp’s jerk wings are great. had one yesterday.
My husband says Manuel’s wings are not only the best in Atlanta, they are the best in the country. (And he travels nationally for a living.)
Does he travel to Buffalo? If so, good news: He can call himself an expert. Bad news: He has to spend time in Buffalo.
Yes, the wings are often the highlight given some of the cities he has to visit.
U joint!
Three Dollar Cafe.
Mobeta.
Took me forever to make the mental connection that it’s pronounced Mo BET uh. For the longest time, I wondered at the origin of Mo BEE tuh. I’m just too literal for my own good, sometimes.
I don’t know what makes a good wing or not, as I rarely eat them. But I have always been curious about the place. So I think I might just have to try it out.
Do you have a favorite style/seasoning?
The cheaper and smaller and crispier the wing the better I like them! I always get them extra crispy with the sauce on the side.
Love the drive-in window.
I see what you did
Mobeta are a lotta betta.
A bit of a trek from Decatur, but the hubs and I love Discover Wings on Indian Trail off of I-85 N. Dry crispy wings with all sorts of flavor combinations. The fries are great too.
A Buffalo native here – born and raised and, if I may say so, knows his wings! I have tried A LOT of wing joints in Atlanta… To me the only place I really like is Fox Bros. Smoked wings aren’t the norm in Buffalo but the sauce tastes like LaNova’s bbq wings back home (try them – it’ll change your life).
Righteous Room
Place in Cumming and also Dahlonega have great wings. They have a dry version called, “cajun” that is a favorite. No extra large hormone induced wings. Nice and crispy.
Here in Atlanta, it is Mobeta for their lemon pepper, and Steinbeck’s for the smoked.
Growing up, we considered the wings to be the least desirable part of any chicken, and I’ve never found any reason to abandon that notion. I think you’ve all been snookered.
Butter, hot sauce and a Fryolator can work some powerful alchemy.
‘s true, indeed
Not snookered. Snockered.
that, too.
P’cheen and Twains!
Bar wings:Square Pub and Manuels
Wing joint: Suzies Wings, just past Pine Lake next to Ingles in the shopping center at Rockbridge and Hairston. 2nd place to the one at Memorial Drive and S Columbia (forgot the name)
Manuel’s Tavern: all flats, crispy, medium sauce. done. finished. shalom.
i smoke my own on my BGE, so while Fox Bros smoked wangs rock, homie don’t play.
It’s been years since I’ve had the lifestyle of hanging out at Manuel’s but, in the day, I loved the wings. But that may have been due to the beer levels and lack of competing bar food.
my studio is in Inman Park, off Highland so i have tons of lunch options, but Manny’s still has its pull for mr. i also love their Cobb Salad. and their staff–very experienced, friendly, and remember my name and order. great classic joint.
+1 love Manuel’s. Best staff in Atlanta, easy parking, cool crowd, diverse menu, can easily accommodate big groups even at the last minute. Manuel’s, Highland Tap, The Optimist and Swapna (Indian) are the pretty much the only reasons we ever leave Decatur to drink and eat.
Sheez, how did I not think to mention Manuel’s?!? Instead of having a formal rehearsal dinner before our wedding, we reserved the whole back room and invited everyone to come party on Friday night. With lasagna, a big tray of dogs with all the fixings, fruit, veggies and cheese, I figured 2 trays of wings would be more than enough for those who wanted them. Of course, about a half hour into it, my dad says “Hey genius, you didn’t order enough goddamn wings!” I ended up telling the server to just keep bringing more out as long as people were eating them. Manuel’s is definitely up there on both the “best of” and “for the money” lists.
The Corner Pub in East Decatur Station actually has fantastic wings. Grilled, not fried, and delicious.
For fancier wings, Steinbeck’s has delicious smoked wings.
Pig n Chik, at the intersection of Briarcliff and Clifton Rd, have fabulous smoked wings. They are regularly priced at 75 cents each, but have been on sale for 50 cents for the last couple of months.
Brocket Pub in Clarkston has the best bar wings. Get the wings with Brocket sauce with a side of fried pickles. Great way to watch a football game. Corner Pub for grilled wings and Fox Brothers for smoked wings.
Mobeta. They’s little ones, which I like betta. A little neater than most wings, and the spicy ones have the right kind of kick, like Frank got more of an attitude.
Taco Mac wings are good. I had the wings at the original place in Buffalo, and they were great, but I wouldn’t use them to set the bar. Some people like wings juicy, while some like them drier on the inside. I like mine dry-ish, with a little crunch in the skin, served up with the bleu cheese. Ranch ain’t right.
