Butter & Cream Now Open on Church Street
Decatur Metro | July 4, 2014 | 4:58 pmAs AHID comments, Butter & Cream ice cream and dessert shop is now open on Church Street. The shop’s Facebook page confirms it!
Decaturish had a post giving background on the new spot a couple of days back.
We had ice cream there last night and it was delicious!
We went last night as well and it was fantastic! A nice change from the sea of fro yo.
I adore their employee, Greer. Awesome young woman.
and i just went up 3 dress sizes
coincidence?
i think not
Went on the 3rd and had the Freckled Chocolate after an amazing dinner at Calle Latina–delish. So nice to have an ice cream store back in Decatur (no offense to the yogurt shops). The amazing weather tied it all up into a perfect night.
The peach ice cream tastes like the homemade kind my family would make using a hand churn. Yummy!
I had the chocolate today and I don’t know if I’ve ever had better. Delicious. People are so friendly and generous with trying samples. Gotta keep them in Decatur as they are a delicious new asset to downtown.
The salted caramel, people. Really. You want the salted caramel.
The Freckled Chocolate was, without exaggeration, the best ice cream I’ve ever tasted. My only complaint is that all 3 of my kids thought their “kiddie cup” was the sample. It came in one of those clear plastic condiment cups you’d squirt ketchup in at Wendy’s. At 2.25 for roughly a tablespoon of ice cream, I recommend up-sizing next time.
I got the kid cone. A sugar cone with a perfectly reasonable amount of ice cream (especially since I’d just stuffed myself at Chai Pani). So maybe try that route if your kids are amenable to the cone option?
I am SO happy to have a reliable ice cream option again! I love Cafe Alsace’s ice cream, but it’s not always available when I want it. And I am just not the “fro-yo” type, I’m afraid. I want the real thing.
A cup of French Vanilla with homemade fudge sauce is also the bomb! Simple but perfect. Customers were streaming in tonight. If all it takes is an excellent product and tons of customers, I think Butter Cream is off to a great start. Can’t speak to the whole business model thingy. I still can’t believe that the Decatur Jake’s had to fold.
A lot of the problem with Jake’s was a corporate / franchisee thing, not a product issue.
That’s what I heard too so Butter Cream shouldn’t have that issue, right? I’m just always heartbroken when a great shop on which I depend fails for business, not product or service, reasons. Examples that come to mind are Oxford Bookstore, the Einstein Brothers store on Clairemont near Athens Pizza, the bookstore that was in the strip mall with Bicycle South that became Party City, then a mattress store (Wordsworth? Wordsmith? Wadsworth?), and of course Jake’s.
Does anyone else find it curious that the business name is two ingredients, one of which isn’t in ice cream? Or are there plans to expand into the toast market…
Someone mentioned that to me last night. My response is that butter is just cream churned even further. (Ever overwhip heavy cream and get butter instead of whipped cream?) So homemade ice cream has a buttery, creamy taste.
I know I read somewhere (FB, Decaturish?) that they were going to make baked items such as cookies as well as ice cream …
Yes, see the link above to the Decaturish article about the plans for this place. From that, I was thinking it would be more about other desserts with ice cream as a nice additional offering. In any case, their plans definitely involve both butter and cream. Not great for my waist, but my palette is certainly looking forward to trying it!
Just enjoyed the Peach in a kid cup. It is tiny, but they packed it. It was exactly the size serving that satisfies me. Friendly staff–lots of samples! And their mint choc chip isn’t green (always a plus for me). YUM. The cookies and brownies looked delicious too.
Can now vouch for the great freckled chocolate flavor too. Am still most enamored of the peach but I’ve always had a special fondness for homemade peach ice cream. Am not going to pronounce it my favorite until I’ve tried the coffee and bourbon toffee too. Don’t want to judge too hastily.
Also noticed that the butter items have arrived-the chocolate chip cookies and brownies. So now it is truly butter and cream. And the servers remain top notch–I will spare them teen angst by not calling them out by name but suffice it to say that I’ve known some of them since they were tykes and am proud to see them so capable now. Tonight was pretty darn busy for a Monday night. I think the place has been discovered.
And we were not the only folks doing the Calle Latina to Butter and Cream itinerary–we saw a couple ahead of us doing the same thing. Have to say that I like the new Calle Latina even though the menu is different from the previous iteration which I also liked. The sangria was great if you like sangria on the sweet side.
