Oyster Roll at Pinewood Lounge
Just had Victory for the first time on Saturday. Crazy cheap sandwiches for $4, and very delicious.
and crazy small, too!
I love me some little sandwiches at Victory, too, but for the money you really can’t beat a Publix sub, especially if you upgrade to Boar’s Head cold cuts.
+1
Cubanini at Java Monkey is very delicious.
Strangely, with the demise of the 5th Earl, Decatur does not have a bonafide sandwich joint. Yes, you can get sandwiches lots of places, including Publix, Subway, Victory — but a place dedicated to the art of sandwich making is missing.
That being said, the jerk chicken hoagie at Mellow Mushroom is the bomb!
Try Sawicki’s. That’s as close as you’ll come in town.
Then there’s Gutbusters’ Philly cheesesteak at Candler and Tilson…
Love Sawickis. And if you go to the Merchant on Dekalb ave at Clifton..they still do the art of the sandwhich. Some great choices in there
It’s not always on the menu, but Sawicki’s oyster po’boy is good.
My brother in law was down here a few years ago and had the exact same reaction to that jerk chicken sandwich. I guess I really do need to try it!
I’ve had it. I’m not sure I get the allure. MM’s bread kinda sucks.
Sawickis: the ham and swiss.
I also like the roast turkey at General Muir
Crispy kale and portabello sandwich on H&F bread at Twains.
Try the kale wrap at the smoothie shop in the middle of the Sweet Auburn Curb Market. Kale and walnuts in a light creamy dressing – feta?
And geez can I just mention how horrible the construction traffic is EVERYWHERE right now. To get to the curb market you may have to go through 3 or 4 construction stops. I think they are recommending dekalb to jesse hill to get into their lot.
I would like to be sandwiched between Cameron Diaz and Salma Hayek.
Ooh, sorry. Too early in the morning?
Early in the morning is the best time for that kind of sandwich!
Sorry also.
The Reuben at the 5th Earl. Best ever. I miss that place so so much.
the Cuban sandwich at Havana Sandwich Shop –once located at Bufu/N.Druid, now Bufu/Clairmont–is the alpha and omega of the sandwich world.
Are there still two competing offshoots from the original Havana Sandwich Shop? If so, which one has the best Cuban sandwich?
there are, and having eaten at both it’s, IMO, not much of a competition. the original is at 3979 Buford Highway–across the parking lot from Aldi.
The one closer to N. Druid Hills Rd. closed some time ago. It just couldn’t compare to the one near Aldi.
If we are going out to Buford Highway, Havana is GREAT but “for the money” you can’t beat the banh mi at Lee’s (some would say you need to farther up to Quoc Huong for “the best” but I’ve never tried it because Lee’s is closer and so damn good). Of course, there are so close to each other that you could always do take-out to mix-and-match your Vietnamese and Cuban deliciousness.
J_T the Banh Mi at Lee’s is ridiculous. Not only is it the best in town, it’s literally $3.50! I mean, seriously??
Whaaaa? Did they raise their prices recently? Or do you order some extra special, fancy banh mi? I don’t think I’ve ever paid more than $3 but, then again, it’s one of the few places where I don’t even look at the prices (or even the menu for that matter). It’s always a Lee’s special, a chicken and a tofu if it’s to go, or a half special and pho if I’m eating it there. Goddamn, I’m getting hungry now!
Lee’s Original Banh Mi is the best. Don’t ask what is in it, just eat it. I think it is $2.75 and if you buy 5 you get one free…
And, Baldino’s is the best for a deli sandwich.
+1 for Lee’s Banh Mi
AWWW, YEAH.
I think Lee’s did raise the prices somewhat, but it does not stop me. I have been up the road to the competition, and I remain firm in my belief that Lee’s is tops. I am taking my niece on Friday, and I am counting the minutes in the interim.
Quoc Huong!
Gesundheit!
Smoothies too. The avocado is awesome, but kids like the mango.
The menu is kind of everywhere, but Dave’s Cosmic Subs in Emory Village makes a fantastic sandwich, pick a sandwich, any sandwich. Victory is my new favorite go to place on foot. I always order the Castro and The Beeter (which is so delicious, and I don’t even like beets).
+1 on the beet sandwich at Victory. Would get my vote for best sandwich under $5.
The Weedeater ain’t too shabby either!
I had a grilled Salmon BLT somewhere in Decatur over a year ago and it was so good it changed my life.
But due to my advanced age, I cannot remember where it was….or else it was so good I blacked out and that is why I can’t remember.
I’m guessing it was the one at Wahoo. Delicious sandwich.
I had a fantastic salmon BLT at Harbour Bar. Great bread, which is usually the weak link in any sandwich.
For the money, the bahn mi at Lee’s Bakery. Delicious and absurdly cheap.
Yes – the sandwiches at Lee’s are all around $2.50. Fresh bread, fresh cilantro – and 1 will fill most people up.
I vacillate between 3 and 4.
Winner, winner, banh mi dinner, though I prefer Huy’s Bakery.
+1 Oh yes, I have to agree with this statement.
Ha! Didn’t even see this until after I replied to Rick above. I guess this is why it’s always so crowded when I try to pick up lunch there!
We posted within seconds of each other. Great palates think alike, I guess.
Palates over politics
+1. The males in our family are addicted to these and make special runs over there BCODB (beyond City of Decatur borders) just for those sandwiches.
I dig the T.C.B. at The Marlay, but it’s not exactly cheap. Victory’s sandwiches are all good, but I honestly need two of them to feel full, so I’m not sure what that means for their “value”.
One of the best values in Atlanta just closed. Toscano & Sons on Atlanta’s westside made an awesome pressed panini for $5.50. Shame they just closed.
Agree with Toscano & Sons that was on Marietta St. Our office is down the block. . The owners shared the week before closing that they planned to re-open – hopefully within the year – and were looking in the Inman Park area. We remain hopeful that it happens soon!
If we’re including Havana and Lee’s on Buford Highway, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Baldino’s. It’s a little farther north, juuuuust OTP across from the BuHi Farmer’s Market. They make THE BEST Jersey style subs I’ve had anywhere outside of Jersey. Better yet, it’s CHEAP. You can get a 19 inch family size sub for 13 bucks and feed four people easily, especially if you throw in a few of the ungodly addicitve pepperoni rolls.
Urban Cannibals on Flat Shoals in East Atlanta!!!!!! Unbeatable sandwiches — farm-to-table fresh and local ingredients. This is sandwich heaven, people. And Chef Calavino Donati is a Decatur resident!
The Fifth Earl, long lost, long missed. Embarrassed to say that it’s only now that I realize why it was called the Fifth Earl.
Amen. And I’m glad we’re not the only ones who still keep a candle burning (okay, maybe the wrong way to memorialize it) for it after all this time. So many great places to eat in Decatur, including some great sandwiches, but there’s still a void.
Jimmy Johns right before the square. Love that I can get a Unwich (wrapped in lettuce instead of bread).
I can’t wait for Palookaville to open in Avondale. Known, of course, for their hand dipped corndogs in a food truck, they are building out in a downtown Avondale tudor. I believe they are going au-natural and making their own preservative free deli meats (and hot dogs) and their menu preview looks very affordable.
I see lots of places above that I now must try, but I think this is about to be my new favorite sandwich place.
I get the sense that the renovations are taking longer than they’d like — they still don’t seem to be close to opening. But I do think it will be a very popular spot once opened. The whole soda fountain thing seems very cool, at least to the ever-shrinking group of folks who don’t equate sugar to poison.
The fifth of earl was the bomb. Miss it too
Victory at Sea at Victory Sandwich! Who knew sardines could taste so so good!
Not one entry touting fabulous homemade sandwiches? Love a PB & J, banana & peanut butter, BLT on toast, fried egg & bacon, egg salad, chicken salad, fried bologna and of course, grilled cheese.
White bread, mayonnaise and a few slices of a Beefsteak tomato sill warm from the garden sun.
If a good tomato’s not available, then it’s acceptable to substitute sliced pineapple.
If making ahead of time to take fishing or to day camp, then homemade pimento cheese is best.
+1
Go to for me is Thinking man’s.
Outside working in heat, I want perfectly small Victory(at sea, probably) But…
I’ve always judged a restaurant by their club, and Thinking Man’s is everything I want in a club, plus always great sides to choose from. (Good club, indicative of everything on menu very good)!
Thanks for asking.
The MLT at Sun in my Belly with added avocado and on wheat bread is ridiculously good! Eat your veggies at Southern Sweets over by the Dekalb Farmers Market is also quite delish. And last but not least, the sandwhiches at Mercantile off Dekalb Ave.
I vote for #1 best pimento cheese sandwich at Sun in My Belly. #2 best pimento cheese at the Corner Pub. Best Roast Beef is the “James Calvin” at Duck’s Cosmic Kitchen.
After all the raves here, I decided to have a “cheat night” on my meatless-except-fish diet and try one of the grilled pork bahn mi sandwiches at Lee’s Bakery. At $2.75 a pop, I agree with others that this is the best sandwich for the money.
Decatur Metro – Reuniting dogs with their owners, dividing drivers and bicyclists, and making us all fat in the process since 2007!
That’s quite a legacy.
No love for Dave’s Cosmic Subs in Emory Village? I’d say that’s a legit sandwich shop. I miss 5th of Earl too
