Evaluating Decatur Wi-Fi

Decatur Metro | August 20, 2009

OK, so I feel like there are still a lot of open questions out there about Decatur Wi-Fi, not least of which is “why do so many people think I’m Decatur Wi-Fi tech support?”  So using the power of the internets, let’s answer some of the questions I’ve been hearing as of late.

First, I’m curious to know how many people have even tried the service.

Secondly, how many people have tried one of Get the Speed’s wireless modems to improve their signal? (like InDecatur recently did with marked improvement)

Agnes Scott Gets Top Marks in U.S. News

Decatur Metro | August 20, 2009

The Decatur Minute has an Agnes Scott press release which touts its top ranking in multiple categories in this year’s U.S. News & World Report’s Top Colleges Issue.

  • #2 “Up-and-Coming School” among liberal arts colleges
  • #17 among liberal arts colleges with “A Strong Commitment to Teaching”
  • #22 “Greats Schools, Great Prices”
  • #59 among “Top Liberal Arts Colleges” nationwide, up from #63 three years ago

Pretty sweet.  Way to show ‘em how it’s done Agnes Scott!

Also, big neighbor to the northwest, Emory, ranked 17th among all national universities.  Also interestingly enough, Emory ranked #11 among the “Up-and-Coming Schools” category.

Hoopla Back-to-School Fair

Decatur Metro | August 20, 2009

Pam from the Cooking for Monkeys blog sends in this announcement…

“Hoopla will be hosting a Back to School Fair with an emphasis on healthy eating and exercise. Curious George will be present along with face painting and balloon animals. The festivities go from 10am-1pm on August 22nd.

The famous Leslie Grant from Chickin Feed (Rachel Ray, Atlanta Magazine) will be there to encourage children to “Make Good Choices” with her Nutrition Tracking Boards and fun activities that promote exercise.

Jacks Harvest products will be available to sample.

Cooking for Monkeys will be making Happy Day Smoothies and will have tips for bento packing and perhaps a demo or two!

After the chaos the kids can relax and focus with a sample kids yoga class at 12pm. Taught by Nicole Jurovics.”

GDOT May Have a Balanced Budget

Decatur Metro | August 20, 2009

Hell has frozen over, and pigs, on landing, are slipping on the ice.  The AJC reports…

After a year and a half of fiscal panic and big cuts, state Department of Transportation officials say they think they have a balanced budget.

How?

The agency cut programs severely to deal with [the deficit]. Roadside grass has gone unmowed, and trash lies in it for months. DOT’s road projects slowed to a trickle, and in some months would have been zilch if not for the federal stimulus. As in other state agencies, employees are furloughed. It’s unclear how long DOT will have to continue those cutbacks.

Damn expensive grass-cutting.
