Publix Suntrust Robbed, Decatur & DeKalb Police Looking For Suspect

Decatur Metro | August 4, 2009

Kathy forwards this note from the CGLNA listserv…

Hi everyone;

I was just driving to my mother’s house down Superior and saw lots of Decatur Police cars. Then a DeKalb County police car motioned for me to pull over. She asked me if I had seen a black man wearing a tan hat and white shirt. . . I said I had not. She said he had just robbed the SunTrust at Publix and that they know he is in the neighborhood behind the shopping center but can’t find him. I asked if he was armed and she said no. I asked if anyone had been hurt and she said no. She said the helicopter is also in the neighborhood looking for him.

Just wanted you to know if case you see anyone with this description.

Also, please keep doors locked!

I’ll see what kind of details I can get from DPD.

Pastry Chef Aaron Russell Leaves The Chocolate Bar

Decatur Metro | August 4, 2009

Omnivore Atlanta is reporting that celebrated Atlanta pastry chef Aaron Russell has left The Chocolate Bar.  How celebrated?  Russell was up for a James Beard award last year.

In the post, Russell explains why he left and in the process has a few not-so-nice words about the new management that took over after Karen Britain left earlier this year.

The Winning 2009 Decatur Beer Festival Logo?

Decatur Metro | August 4, 2009

Beer Festival Logo 2009

My wife wonders whether this little mustachioed, bowler hat-wearing dude, who staggered into a page 3 article about grant proposals in the July Focus, is the winning logo for this year’s beer festival.

If so, I’m making sure to adopt his slightly European look for the festival: mustache, bowler hat and heels.  Then instead of sipping the beer, I’m going to toss it into my mouth just like little Jacques up there.

Oh man I’m going to be classy.

DeVry Annexation Passes

Decatur Metro | August 4, 2009

Having a guest in town last night, we opted for 1/2 bottles at Watershed over the commission meeting, but the AJC reports this morning that the DeVry annexation passed unanimously.  The commission also approved the change in zoning to “mixed-use.”

Money wise…

As is, the campus is valued at $13.5 million, generating about $222,000 in taxes for the city and school district.

With 550 residential units plus $10 million worth of commercial space, the land is projected to be worth $65 million and put more than $1 million into city and school district coffers.

This should be a very interesting project once it gets off the ground.  If it does indeed offer walkable retail to Sycamore Heights residents, one can assume that the desirability of that neighborhood will increase quickly.
