Zombie Children’s Author Coming to Decatur Book Festival

Decatur Metro | August 6, 2009

Little Shop of Stories is currently in the process of blogging all the children and young adult authors coming to this year’s Decatur Book Festival over on its “Little Blog of Stories“.

One of the latest entries is David Lubar, who just released “My Rotten Life: Nathan Abercrombie, Accidental Zombie.”

The Little Blog post also notes that there have been at least 6 prominent zombie posts on this site in recent months.  That must be why “zombies” has become the second most searched word that brings folks to Decatur Metro.

Tastings Is NOT Closing

Decatur Metro | August 6, 2009

There’s a rumor floating around this morning that Tastings: A Wine Experience is closing.

Owner Kelly Resignola tells DM the rumor is not true, and that she is grateful for the steady business they have been maintaining.

Sounds like a good reason to stop by for a drink. :-)

CSD Opening Day

Decatur Metro | August 6, 2009

CSD opening day arrival II

DHS teacher Chris Billingsley continues to provide us with great coverage from CSD events.  Here’s a report and some pics from CSD’s recent opening day ceremonies at Agnes Scott.

In her remarks, Dr. Edwards urged us to fight for excellence in our schools and public education. Our motivational speaker was Mr. Murray Banks, former teacher, coach and world champion athlete, who received a well deserved standing ovation at the end of his inspiring presentation. CSD business partners, Ricoh, Ra-Lin and Associates, Winter Construction, Collins Cooper Carusi Architects, and Wilson, Morton, and Downs, LLC. sponsored a delicious lunch from Skips Hotdogs in Avondale Estates. Outstanding entertainment was provided by Hotlanta Dixieland Jazz band, “Jazz With A Southern Accent”. Everyone had a good time. This was a great way to start the school year.

More pics after the jump.

Three Decatur Schools Broken Into Last Week

Decatur Metro | August 6, 2009

Wow…I’m amazed this one flew under the radar.  From the Superintendent’s overview for next week’s school board meeting…

Unfortunately, three of our buildings were broken into last week (Clairemont, Westchester and DHS). Windows were broken out in Westchester. Maintenance worked to close up and fix the damage and now we set about the business of determining what was taken. It is very sad to know that schools are not safe or off limits for criminals.

I’ve already followed up with CSD.  We’ll see what else can be learned.

UPDATE: More details from Associate Superintendent Thomas Van Soelen…

At the time of the board meeting, we believed that three facilities had been affected. We were notified by the Decatur Police that two schools were broken into right before the opening of school. The high school had two break-ins, with the second resulting in a loss of equipment in our video production classroom. DHS will soon have a state of the art security system with many cameras at various locations. In the future, it should be more difficult for thieves and others to damage the school property without being identified.

Westchester, the central office site, was also affected: glass being smashed at the rear entrance. This appears to have been a malicious act as nothing was taken from this site.

We have alarm systems but ask the neighbors to please keep a watch on the school property.
