Sure you’ll get lots of opinions on this one, but I’d go with El Rey Del Taco or Chicago Supermarket, across the street from each other on Buford Highway. Hard to go wrong with either, no tex-mex foolery here.. Both will set you back less than $2 per taco in most cases.
I am darn fond of the charolitas option at Willy’s. I think it’s not listed under Tacos but as a separate category. But to my mind, it’s a soft taco variation. It reminds me more of street tacos in Los Angeles or in New Mexican pueblos vs. an American restaurant taco.
There may be better tacos in Atlanta than the Fish Tacos and Brisket Tacos from Taqueria Del Sol, but I have a hard time leaving Decatur for a better taco.
+1 for the brisket taco. It also reminds me of street tacos in the Southwest.
+1. My standing order at TdS has been “one Fish, one Brisket” for as long as I can remember.
The baja shrimp & fish tacos at El Senor Taco on Buford Highway. At just under $2 a piece, plus the fact that you can top their toppings from the pickle & salsa bar (which, BTW, are amazing), makes them an even better deal. An added bonus: they use El Milagro corn tortillas. I’m addicted to their hot pickled onion/habanero chile relish–it’s roof-of-the-mouth-burningly delicious!
what she said.
bonus points because you can pick up some criminally cheap banh mi from Lee’s Bakery for the ride home.
Since the recommendations here turned me on to Lee’s Bakery, I’m gonna try El Senor Taco today!
Taqueria Los Hermanos serves my favorite tacos.
+1 Taqueria Los Hermanos … their fish tacos are sublime.
+1. We love TLH so much we wrote a jingle for them that we sing in the car on the way there. No joke.
Love the buffalo chicken tacos at Verde on Dresden.
This is hard choice b/c we have so many great options. I’ll stick to Decatur area to keep it simple. I love the chicken tacos at Taqueria del Sol (ask them to use rotisserie chicken instead to change it up) and the grilled fish taco at Mezcalito’s in Oakhurst (if you like spicy, sub the jalapeno slaw vs. chipotle slaw). Last night I sat at Wahoo bar and had their blackened fish tacos app and it was quite nice (though at $10 for two they run a little higher than others I have mentioned). And then for plain ole “Mexican restaurant” tacos – my 11 year old loves the soft chicken tacos at Los Loros. Have we done a “best margaritas” yet?
+1 for a best margaritas discussion. (Though the best ones may be at my house: 3 parts tequila + 2 parts Grand Marnier + 1 part fresh lime juice. Ole!)
Good work, Sara — those are real margaritas! Tequila mixed with neon green mix is something else entirely. I usually sub Cointreau for the Grand Marnier and use a slightly higher tequila ratio, but those are quibbles. (I think Cointreau is a bit cheaper.)
I really like the tacos at Napoleons in Oak Grove, but you can’t get them ala carte. Same deal with the fish tacos at La Fonda Latina, which may be my favorite. For the money, though, it’s hard to go wrong with the fish tacos at TDS.
Uh that would be the fried chicken taco at Tacqueria… It’s like heroin without the unhealthy side effects and issues with law enforcement.
Nuevo Laredo…hands down.
agree with Nuevo Laredo, that fish taco is simply the best! but in Decatur I would vote for Calle Latina.
Yes! As is the chicken diablo. Man, i am getting hungry just thinking about it!
+1 for Calle Latina. But I’m so in love with their arepas that I never order the tacos so I didn’t think to mention them.
Yes, badda bing for Calle Latina! Their empanadas make living so far from BHFM bearable and the tacos are delicious too. Also awesome are the fried green tomatoes with pepper jam. I thought Michael had lost his mind when I heard he was opening a Latin place but it turns out he knew what he was doing. I hope Decatur supports it enough to keep it around.
+1 on Calle Latina. I’ve loved everything I’ve tried there (but haven’t tried the tacos yet). My one complaint is that they aren’t open on Mondays, the one weekday I’m home for lunch.
Neuvo is good, but not necessarily “for the money.”
The blackened shrimp tacos at Six Feet Under
I’ve got to agree with Brad. Steak tacos at Buford Highway Farmer’s Market.
Wait, Brad didn’t say that yet? I just assumed he did! Whatever, he’s right. I used to be simply an empanada man at the BHFM until he turned me onto the taco goodness there too.
[Pro Tip: Get at least one empanada with your taco order so you’ll also get that awesome spicy salsa which are also great on the tacos. Yes, I know you can simply ask for a side of the salsa but, if you do that, you’ll miss out on the empanada!]
Next time I’ll read before I post… All my favorites already called out!
Can someone provide directions to the taco places on Buford, or a description of the place? I am directionally challenged and want to make sure we go to the right place.
El Senor Taco is next to Lee’s Bakery on Buford Highway, about a half-mile north of Clairmont. Probably the best landmark to look for is the Chevron station. It’s in the same little strip mall as the restaurants.
Also, Nubbs, I should have noted the Chevron will be on the right if you are coming from Clairmont (or from Atlanta).
I know where Lee’s is, so that us perfect! On my way to and from Costco – thanks!
For the money, it’s Los Rayos between Clairmont and Buford Highway. They have amazing authentic carnitas, al pastor, chorizio, even tripe and beef tongue if you’re feeling brave.
If you remove price considerations, the pork cheek tacos at Iberian Pig are simply amazing.
While I do love the tacos at TdS, our family makes the drive to El Taco Veloz at 5084 Buford Highway when time permits b/c those are pretty authentic and similar to taco stands in Mexico.
El Taco Veloz — there is no competition.
I agree with the Taco Veloz. I have eaten at several locations and they are all good.
for the money? taco bell soft tacos. or the cool ranch doritos taco.
tried hankook taqueria on the west side of town a couple weeks back. pretty damn good stuff there.
All less than $2 per:
1. Carne Asada tacos at Buford Highway Farmers Market
2. El Rey (lengua, carne asada, chorizo) – BuHi
3. El Senor Taco – fish & shrimp – BuHi
4. Taco Night at my house — still love the old school yellow-box, hard shell only of course with just ground beef, iceberg & cheddar cheese. Reminds me of being a kid.
Just looked up lengua. Now I can’t order one. When’s your next taco night? I’ll stop by with a couple of Coronas.
Try the carnitas instead! I’ll let you know when taco night comes back around!
I ate like a bird as a kid, but I used to eat six or seven of those on taco night at my house.
Caramba on Dekalb Ave/Pencil Factory lofts has great box style tacos.
Bone Garden is great. When we burn ourselves out on Taqueria Los Hermanos, we go there.
Rob Atherholt smokes his brisket, goat, and pork on premises at Taqueria El Vecino in Oak Grove. The stuff is quite good, and there’s the bonus of Carolyn;s Cupcakes being in the house. Highly recommended.
I’ve never left enough room to try those cupcakes. Someday, maybe.
Perla Taqueria
Peidmont
+1000 for Perla. Had lunch there today, as a matter of fact. Exercised restraint and only ate two, could really go for two more right now!
Calle Latina does have great tacos (and empanadas)
Also our standby – Raging Burrito. Fish tacos are awesome. Brisket is good too. $8 for 2 tacos with rice and beans.
I can’t believe no one has mentioned Taqueria San Pancho in Tucker. Very authentic and very tasty, I think the tacos are like $1.25 or so.
Being a regular at TDS my favorite special tacos are the Waco, BLT, and the Bob. Pure bliss.
I’m willing to bet a large percentage of the posters on this thread are gonna swap out whatever they’d originally planned for dinner tonight & have–that’s right–TACOS! I know The Libres are, for sure. The only question now is, El Senor’s, or TDS??? Decisions, decisions…
TDS!! Chef Eddie’s tamales are the dinner special. We won’t be able to make it until the weekend, but I can’t wait.
OMG, that’s right–I read about him winning that tamale competition! Welp, TDS it is–thanks for the reminder (and making my decision for me).
I can’t speak for anybody else, but I’m 90% sure that I’ll be grabbing two Cubana or Carne Molida tacos at Calle Latina on the way to my dart match. Unless, of course, they let me mix and match for one of each like they did let me do last time.
[Do you hear me, Michael?!? Mix and match or a la carte tacos need to be always available!!! I’m too ADHD to ever eat two of the same kind!!!]
The smoked pork taco with chili tossed cabbage has always left me smiling at Steinbeck’s.
The Fried Chicken Waffle taco at Square Pub. I thought it was an oddity, but was hooked after trying it. Bizarre, but it works. I like their fish taco as well – great garnishments on it.
In terms of real/traditional tacos, +1 to Taqueria Los Hermanos (I go to the one in Tucker), especially, as others noted, the fish tacos.
Another vote for Taqueria San Pancho in Tucker. Can’t beat the price. Incredible food.
Los Hermanos in Tucker is worth the drive for a fish taco. Puts all other fish tacos in Atlanta to shame. Spicy peppers and onions and avocado cream sauce. Get em fried or grilled…can’t go wrong. I can’t even order fish tacos at TdS anymore because they are just a disappointment compared to Los Hermanos!
The “problem” with getting tacos at Los Hermanos is that almost everything else on the menu is even better, including the tamales that are only available on weekends.
Hankook Taqueria
seems apropos somehow
