Where to watch the fireworks? We’ve been out of town or it’s rained the last couple of years. We used to go to the P. Lot behind 315 Ponce. Ideas folks?

I’ve noticed some people like watching the downtown Decatur fireworks from the high school parking lot, otherwise you always have the square and all of the usual suspects.

There would be more good vantage points around town, if it weren’t for all the trees.

STG go boom! But watch out, you really WILL be living in a lonely world if you keep up that C.O.D snark.

          Ha ha!
I jokingly said that out loud on the Square last night.
Dirty looks? Yes, there were dirty looks.

Studies have shown that people who live under too heavy a tree canopy tend to take themselves too seriously. Correlation isn’t causation, but just sayin’…

I haven’t tried this myself, EcoNuke, but the lawn of the First Christian Church looks like a lovely viewing spot. It’s popular, but doesn’t seem too crowded. It’s outside of the street closures so you don’t risk getting trapped.

Where can I get a description of the street closures for tonight? We’ve never gone to the fireworks in the Square and are considering it this year. Tips or tricks for a newbie appreciated.

Ground zero for fireworks proximity is the top of the parking deck above Thumbs Up. I don’t recommend it you’re not into concussive noise.

The parking lot of Leaping Lizards and/or Sams Street itself is the area I’m looking to stake out.

ISO actual help with Google Drive (as opposed to what Google offers)… HOA uses Gmail and Google Drive. Recently had turnover in Treasurer position. We changed the password on the Google account and I used un-share to remove the former treasurer’s access to all folders. When I check the settings, it indicates that no folder or individual file is accessible to anyone unless they’re signed on through our account. However, the former treasurer keeps telling me he “can still see the HOA docs.” I can’t find any indication that our account is linked with any other. (The recovery info was changed months ago, and rests solely with me.) So far, haven’t been able to get details from him about what he’s seeing or how. He’s quite tech-y, so I’m pretty sure he’s not looking at cached files. Could he have his own Google account linked to our Drive in a way that I can’t see? Or what?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice. (Except, please don’t say “Google for an answer.” This issue has cropped up in user forums quite a bit, but not for several years. I’ve done everything and checked everything I can find.)

        July 4, 2014 at 12:10 pm

Could it possibly be apps related?

(Not that I know how to then go about solving it, but apps kept coming up as the likely culprit for several inquiries on the Google Group help forum the other day.)

        • AMB says:
          July 4, 2014 at 12:40 pm

Is it possible that mobile devices are still linked?

      • DecaturDuck says:
        July 5, 2014 at 9:37 am

You probably have an app password set that is different than the main google password. Go to account settings then security then app passwords.

      • smalltowngal says:
        July 6, 2014 at 12:18 pm

Appreciate the suggestions but can’t figure out if/how any of them apply.

I don’t know what “apps related” would mean. All we use is Gmail and Google Drive.

There is indication of one mobile device, first used on the account April 2013 and last used Dec 2013. When I try to “manage devices” it tells me there are no active devices.

I can’t figure out how to reach “app passwords” possibly because we aren’t using any apps? There is a password for the Google account, by which we access the mail and the drive. We changed it.

        • Deanne says:
          July 6, 2014 at 12:32 pm

Have you had the former treasurer check his devices? Maybe it’s as simple as him logging out of the two accounts across all his gadgets to clear him out for good.

          • smalltowngal says:
            July 6, 2014 at 3:32 pm

That sounds sensible, and we’ll certainly try, the next time we can get his attention. He is a person who likes being able to point out that something is amiss, then sit back and watch while we struggle to resolve it. (Case in point: he mentioned he can still see docs he shouldn’t, but is ignoring our follow-up queries.) Interestingly, most of the chatter I found online about this issue with Google accounts, pertained to people trying (with mixed success) to ensure access was blocked for former employees. Not sure how Google gets away with this kind of thing.

Happy Friday, & Happy Fourth of July, DM peeps!! Am LOVING this (unexpectedly) gorgeous weather–so happy it’s not sweltering outside…never thought I’d be grateful for a hurricane & its aftermath!

That’s it–we went by about 3:20 and they were putting somebody in one of the four ambulances there. There was a black sedan wrapped around the pole, but I didn’t see any other car. At first it looked like it had been hit by a train. Can’t imagine how fast you’d have to be going to do that much damage. I hope everybody got out ok.

Butter and Cream, new homemade ice cream store by the MARTA Station on Church, is open! I can vouch for the peach ice cream–creamy and delicious! Just the thing for the 4th of July. I will definitely be frequenting this place a lot!. If Calle Latina gets back into regular hours, I can see this being quite the outing. Arepas followed by homemade ice cream!

Y’all know I loves me some Decatur but damn if Avondale Estates doesn’t BRING IT when it comes to fireworks. Relentless display. Grand finale quality all the way through. Kudos AE for a job well done.

I agree. I have always gone to the Decatur Fireworks. This year I wanted to check out Avondale’s display and it was amazing. Next year I am going to go early enough to get a better viewing spot.

Agreed, but I wish word hadn’t gotten out to our Decatur neighbors. 😛 This year was the most crowded I’ve ever seen it! I missed being able to wander up to my usual spot with a view of the fireworks over the lake and instead got relegated to a view framed between some trees.

I also want to thank the leadership of First Christian Church (down by Dancing Goats) for offering their lawn to viewers. Their clergy members were walking around handing out cookies and meeting folks last night. Very friendly folks. Such a kind contribution to the community.

The pastor of the church circulated in the crowd, meeting people and distributing flyers about the church. He introduced himself and said, “Now I’d like to share some of our propaganda with you….” He seems like a really funny and down-to-earth fellow.

      • Deb says:
        July 5, 2014 at 8:49 am

I second the thank you to the First Christian Church. Crowd was more polite than the Agnes Scott grassy knoll also. Now watching the lower fireworks through the trees was like a live Christmas tree, however. . .

I met friends there who walked over from Druid Hills and had the same thought. Nice location, friendly people and … a giant tree blocking 65% of the fireworks :) In some sense it was cool through the trees.

Thank you to Wahoo for a lovely dinner on the patio and the two for one entree specials for the 4th. We were even able to see quite a bit of the fireworks from our table. This may become a new tradition for us–depending on the weather of course.

What is the best place in Decatur for a guys get together with bourbon drinks? Thinking about my husband’s birthday….

      • Rick Julian says:
        July 6, 2014 at 1:30 pm

Mac McGees has over 70 bourbons if they’re the sipping sort.

if they like defiling the nectar, then Pinewood, Paper Plane, or Leon’s serve good cocktails with bourbon in them

      • J_T says:
        July 6, 2014 at 11:38 pm

Second the Mac McGee’s suggestion. They’ve got a great selection of Kentucky bourbons and ryes, as well as whisk(e)y from Ireland, Scotland and the states. I went the bourbon route yesterday in honor of the Fourth.
