Mutant Chicken Greets Students at College Heights

Decatur Metro | August 11, 2009

chicken greeter 1

NellieBellie has sent in shocking photographic evidence of a giant, mutant chicken harassing innocent students on their first day of school at College Heights yesterday.

I’d like to go on the record saying that I have no problem with mutant poultry as long as they remain concealed under porches and among thick brush.  But I draw the line when they become bold enough to start terrorizing our children on their first day of school!  Be it cockroaches or mutant chickens, the same rule applies: for every one you see, there are hundreds that you can’t.

In fact, I can almost guarantee that least 30% of all commenters here are some form of mutant poultry.  (FYI…the intermittent “bawk!”s are giving you away.  Is it really necessary to type out “bawk”?!  Seems a bit excessive.)

More gruesome documentation after the jump.

Narrowing Church Street Permanently

Decatur Metro | August 11, 2009

Over on his blog, Mayor Bill Floyd asks for feedback on Church Street’s relatively new on-street parking.  According to the post, the city commission will decide this fall whether to make the change permanent.

The on-street parking was originally added to Church during the renovation of Glenlake Park, but the city has made little secret that it was also a test to determine the effectiveness of slowing traffic by reducing road-width.

The mayor says he believes the changes are working “quite well” to reduce traffic, though he’d like to make “some modifications.”

Extend the reduction to two lanes all the way from Commerce Drive to North Decatur Road. Add bicycle lanes and parking on both sides of the road. I would also like to see the traffic lights at Fortner and Lucerne removed and “round-a-bouts” installed.

He wants to know your thoughts, so now’s the time to speak up!

Since my pedestrian brain tends to dominate over my automobile brain these days, I love it and can’t wait ’til Clairemont and Commerce get similar treatment.

Logo!

Decatur Metro | August 11, 2009

Yesterday, Decatur Metro was just an idea; a bodiless web address displayed in a weird, italicized, default font tucked in the corner of the page.

But TODAY, thanks to Lauren Lee, Marcia Lampe and all the great folks at Lampe-Farley Communications, Decatur Metro is now a bold and exciting logo!

Here’s a pic of Lauren thinking about how awesome her logo design is.

We’re still tweaking the size and position, but I’m loving it.  Loving it so much that I’m going to plaster it on everything! T-shirts with preachy and/or snarky comments, car windshields, your cats and dogs, AJC newspaper boxes, other websites!  The annoying marketing possibilities are limitless!  Drool…

Moving Truck Gets Stuck On Decatur Tracks

Decatur Metro | August 11, 2009

moving truck stuck on tracks 2

William sends in pics and a report of a moving truck that got stuck trying to go over the train tracks at Trinity.

6:30PM on Monday, August 10

Around 6:30PM on Monday traffic was being diverted around the East College and East Trinity intersection because a “low-boy” moving van was stuck on the railroad tracks. Once the tow truck arrived things moved along quickly. A tow cable was attached to the rear of the van and the entire truck was pulled backward until the rear wheels were placed firmly on the ground. The manager at the Dairy Queen said that he’s seen this happen several times, but never when a train was nearby.

One more pic after the jump gives a better sense of the truck’s dilemma. Read the rest of this entry »
