This Saturday is “Community Shred Day”

Decatur Metro | October 19, 2010

From Downtown Decatur’s Facebook Page…

The Community School and Eagle Secure Shredding are sponsoring a Community Shred Day October 23 from 10 a.m.-1 pm. at the First Baptist Church of Decatur.

If you missed it in the spring, here’s your chance! Have your old tax records, bills, bank statements and other confidential documents shredded on-site and recycled by Atlanta’s premiere shredding company.  Donations of $5 per bankers box are welcome and all proceeds go to support The Community School, a school for junior and high school students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

The First Baptist Church of Decatur is located at 308 Clairemont Ave. Visit www.thecommunityschool.net for more information about the school and the event.

Rain or shine!

Finding a Good Space for a Group Dinner in Decatur

Decatur Metro | October 19, 2010

Fred Boykin writes in…

An old friend is coming back for a visit and wants to meet up with about a dozen of us for dinner next Saturday night. She hasn’t been back in a long time and is looking forward to seeing how well Decatur has “grown up”.

Does anyone know a place in Decatur where we could get a room to ourselves (or a section)? A place not too heavy on the prices with enough variety for the diets & special requests a larger group always seems to have these days!

Giving Decatur the Power to TAD

Decatur Metro | October 19, 2010

On your November 2nd ballot, Decatur residents will find this lovely legalese…

Shall the Act be approved which authorizes the City of Decatur to exercise redevelopment powers under the ‘Redevelopment Powers Law,’ as it may be amended from time to time?”

In layman’s terms this essentially asks you, “Should Decatur have the option to create Tax Allocation Districts inside the city limits?”

Tax Allocation Districts or “TADs” have been used with mixed success throughout the Atlanta metropolitan area in recent years. The most prominent – and successful example – being Atlantic Station.  In a nutshell, TADs use additional tax revenue generated by new development on-site, (i.e. – the difference between your taxes pre-renovation and after renovation) to pay-off the very construction bonds that funded the development in the first place.

Dog Missing, May Have Been Hit By Car

Decatur Metro | October 19, 2010

An Oakhurst resident writes in…

This morning my dog, Clara, went outside around 6:45 and didn’t come back when I called. At 7:15 a neighbor heard me calling her and said she thinks she heard a dog get hit on our street. I live on Oakview Rd not far from the intersection with S. McDonough St. Clara is about 50 lbs, and she’s black and tan. She’s also spayed. She should have on a collar with my address and telephone numbers.

I’m hoping someone took her to a neighborhood vet.

If you have any info on this dog, please contact DM directly and I can give you the owner’s phone number.
