Finding a Good Space for a Group Dinner in Decatur
Decatur Metro | October 19, 2010Fred Boykin writes in…
An old friend is coming back for a visit and wants to meet up with about a dozen of us for dinner next Saturday night. She hasn’t been back in a long time and is looking forward to seeing how well Decatur has “grown up”.
Does anyone know a place in Decatur where we could get a room to ourselves (or a section)? A place not too heavy on the prices with enough variety for the diets & special requests a larger group always seems to have these days!

I’m not sure about variety on diets (although I do think they have some vegetarian cuisine), but Cafe Lilly’s back room is often used to accommodate large groups.
Cafe Lily would be a great choice.
Cafe Lily’s new room is available to large parties which reserve ahead. The Chef Anthony will prepare special meals on request…even vegan!
I have been to group dinners – birthday celebrations, showers, etc at Feast . They have an area in the back corner that feels like a private section. I have also been with groups of 10-12 seated at a large table in front near the window. that worked fine , too.
McGowan’s in Oakhurst seems like it would fit the bill. They have several rooms or sections that could accomodate a big group.
I seated 10-12 in that back oval table at the Marlay…
Carpe Diem. They have several spaces for groups, food is great and not too expensive.
Lisa – I was just about to suggest with Carpe Diem also! They have a great front room that you can reserve/rent.. might be a little big for 10-12 people, but perfect for 20-25. And as noted, other nice nooks and crannies for groups throughout the restaurant.
And it’s pretty!
The Athens Pizza on Clairmont – not as trendy as downtown Decatur, but excellent food and service. It’s the next best place to Mom’s house!
Besides, Fred, it’s right behind Bike South…!
Not in the City of Decatur, but then again neither is Bike South.
I went to a larger group gathering at the Raging Burrito (or was it in the Raging Taco part?) that was pretty successful. Since most of the menu is infinitely customizable and the food & drink prices are pretty reasonable, it might be good for your situation.
What about the little gated/curtained off area inside of Feast? We reserved the space for my sister’s bachelorette dinner a few years ago and it was a wonderful space and experience. We even were successful in asking them to close the curtains for an even more intimate experience for all of us. I seem to remember it holds about 12-15? Have fun, regardless of where you end up!
Siam Thai, we have had a couple of “banquet” nights with 12 friends. Tell them ahead of time and they will prepare a menu that will be X $ per person depending on your budget.
Service is spectacular, the food is excellent.
You can even make your own menu for your guests showing the array of delicious treats forthcoming
No room to yourself but is is a pretty intimate and quiet restaurant anyway
upstairs @ the iberian pig!
Oh, yeah– that’s an awesome space! We’ve been there with groups of 6-10 several times, and had a blast every time. They’re so nice & accommodating, too!
I agree with the Iberian Pig suggestion.
I 3rd the upstairs at the pig. Great place
I fourth the Iberian Pig upstairs. Good food and bar selection. They have lots of small plates to share.

i would recommend feast or watershed.
Wow! The power of Decatur Metro. Thanks for posting my request – and thanks for all the responses. I’m going to send my friend a link to the DM blog and let her read up herself.
One thing about Cafe Lily though. I’ve used that back room a few times – a great space for sure, but it’s been a year or two since I’ve been there. I thought I heard that they had converted it to a wine bar area or something – at any rate, it was no longer really set up to use for larger parties?
You might also consider the prix fixe at Eurasia. It makes splitting the bill much easier. I was at a birthday party with a group of a similar size at Cafe Lily. It’s great, too. A group of your size would take over half of Steinbeck’s!
Fred, the back room of Cafe Lily can still easily accommodate a party of 12.
We have converted the side room into a Tapas Lounge, but we still don’t hesitate to book it for large parties! The entire room will seat 40 comfortably, but there is an alcove in the very back that seats up to 12. We also have a small private room in the main dining area that will seat 8.
You may check out sample dinner party menus and the new Tapas Lounge menu on our website: http://www.cafelily.com
WAHOO on W. College is great for groups of all sizes. I’ve been there on different occasions
in groups ranging from 8 – 15 and they were always accomodating, plus there’s no problem with getting separate checks. They have their basic dining room plus an enclosed patio.
Also, they have an open patio with heaters. A great menu with terrific food and service, too.
I’m a big fan of Wahoo!
Wahoo! has a great private space now, and the food is great for meat eaters and vegetarians alike.
Parkers on Ponce has a private room too, but it may be a little bit bigger than what you’re after.
Oh, and I’ve done a similar sized dinner at Watershed before with great results. They have one big table that seats at least 12 people. It can get a little loud in there, but the food is excellent (of course).
My new fave is Iberian Pig. GREAT food reasonably priced. Watershed is way overpriced in my opinion. Wahoo is good too.
Cafe Lily’s extra room should be perfect plus the menu easily provides a great variety.
The wine list is not to be missed.
Sevice is the best in the City.
