Last Day for MARTA Tokens

Today is the very last day you can turn any of those old MARTA tokens into 1-way Breeze Cards at MARTA stations.  If you have more than 10 tokens left and want to transfer them to cards, you’re gonna have to make a trip to the RideStore at Five Points or Airport station.

But this is it for those tokens.  Tomorrow their value goes from 2 bucks to chuck.

Farewell MARTA tokens.  I shall miss the metallic-y smell you left on my hands.

If Decatur Had a Mascot…

…what would it be?

(I’m feeling particularly caffinated this morning.)

Decatur Strategic Plan – Get Schooled on the Issues

As the next step in the Decatur Strategic Planning process for the next 10 years, the city of Decatur is hosting four “Community Academys” starting next Tuesday, which will take all of our open-ended, hypothetical ideas from the roundtables and pit them against each other in an all-out fight to the death.

  • Walkability?  Meet bikeability and traffic management!
  • Aging in place??  Meet density concerns!
  • A well-funded school system and grudgingly accepted higher taxes?  Meet the desire for a “diverse” community!

Oh yes, this is where the truly ugly magic happens.  For those of you who turned to your reusable, organic vomit bags after all the sky-pie you were forced to consume during the roundtables, this messy – and yet thoroughly productive – exercise IS FOR YOU!

“Yeah, yeah.  Shut up man and give us the dates!”  OK, OK.  From DecaturNext…

  • Going Mobile: Managing Transportation Choices • Tuesday, October 5
  • Decatur For Life: Aging in Place, Affordability, Diversity • Monday, October 25
  • The New Main Street: Economics of the Complete Community • Thursday, November 4
  • Getting the Love We Want: Understanding Development Issues • Wednesday, November 17

All sessions are from 7-9p and you should RSVP at 678.553.6584 if you’d like to participate.  Need I exaggerate more?

Atlanta Bike Commuting Up 111% Year-to-Year

Bike community held steady as a mode of transportation from 2008 to 2009, despite falling gas prices, according to U.S. Census numbers of the 70 largest U.S. Cities, compiled by The League of American Cyclists.

In Atlanta, the share of bicycle commuters to the total city population rose from .51% to 1.08% from ’08 to ’09, an 111% increase.   This was in line with the key takeaway from the League’s analysis that cities with the fewest bike amenities saw the largest year-to-year growth this past year.

Still, Atlanta’s numbers are impressive.  That 111% increase propelled the city from a rank of 39th in % of bike commuters in 2008 to 22nd in 2009.

Lain, who also forwarded the study, notes that it’s sort of shocking that Atlanta’s % of bike commuters was almost the same as the city of Chicago, where 1.15% of commuters bike to work.

According to the ranker, the top 5 bike cities in the U.S. are 1. Portland, OR 2. Minneapolis, MN, 3. Seattle, WA, 4. San Francisco, CA, 5. Oakland, CA.
