    Hungry Cat Found in Oakhurst

    Decatur Metro | April 18, 2016 | 3:03 pm

    missing cat

    Mango writes in…

Is anyone missing a long-haired gray and white cat in the Oakhurst area?  He/she has been hanging around our Winter Ave backyard [for a couple of weeks].  Friendly and clean-looking but very thin and happy to eat anything we provide. Email me at [email protected]  if you know this cat.

New Brewpub Coming to Old Mulligan’s Space in Old Family Dollar Strip in Oakhurst

    Decatur Metro | December 17, 2015 | 10:46 am

    family dollar 1

Oh man, I’m so jealous for not coming across this news first!  And I’m also so jealous that I don’t live closer to this new place!

Decaturish broke the news yesterday that there’s a spurt of announcements on Reddit over the past few MONTHS regarding a new brewpub in Oakhurst, Oak Brewpub.

Here’s one from six solid months ago looking for a head brewer…

We are opening a new brewpub located Intown Atlanta. We are “scheduled” to be open the first couple months of 2016. We are currently looking to start a relationship with a brewer who will become our head brewer. Previous experience is required. We are looking for someone with strong opinions about their beer and how they want the brew setup to be designed. The brewer hired will have the benefit of designing the lay out of the brewhouse/ fermentation tanks to their liking within the building limitations. We also offer competitive salary and benefits. We require the normal and essential job responsibilites listed below but not limited to: -Maintain all legal compliance -Keep a clean and organized environment -Schedule and keep labor within industry standard costs -Produce beer according to projected sales and demand -Evaluate margins and costs with ability to make necessary adjustments -Participate in the local community and help to promote brand through different marketing and promotional events -Partake in local guilds and beer festivals -Ability to travel for out of state events -Make great beer and have a sense of humor

In the thread, they also mention that they would be opening in the old Mulligans – “Home of the once world-famous Luther Burger!‘ – location at 630 East Lake Drive (in the strip with the old Family Dollar for all the newbies).  If you want to go off on a random tangent and learn more about the world-famous Luther Burger, you can check out this extensive feature on Snopes from long ago.  And for more on Mulligan’s famous “ham dog”, click here and scroll down a bit.

Two months ago, they promised a “Late Spring 2016” opening.

All this chatter went unnoticed it seems, until a recent Beer Guys Radio “Breweries in Planning” post mentioned the new spot…

As of May 2015 Oak Brewpub was on the search for a Head Brewer and targeting a Late Spring 2016 opening date.  The brewpub will be located in Decatur’s Oakhurst neighborhood where they’ve signed a lease on a 4.500 square-foot space with plans to open a roof top deck garden where you can enjoy a beer or watch a movie on their projector screen.

That’s where Decaturish picked it up and found out more info like the number of taps, the beer style focus and who the head brewer will be – Chuck Duffney, formerly of Orpheus Brewing!

    Decatur Metro | November 16, 2012 | 9:39 am

Based purely on the number of pics we’ve received of this new interactive public exhibit in Oakhurst, we’d say it’s quite a hit!  Here’s a sampling…

    Bike Missing in Oakhurst

    Decatur Metro | December 1, 2011 | 11:04 am

    Heather wrote in yesterday…

We live in Oakhurst, on Greenwood Place near College Avenue. Sunday night our family went to dinner, after my daughter had ridden her bike up and down our street a few times. We keep our bikes unlocked, but so far haven’t had a problem since they are pretty well hidden from passers-by. When we returned home, there was a bike that did not belong to us or neighbors lying on its side on the sidewalk in front of our house, which immediately got our attention. As we walked toward the house, we noticed that my daughter’s bike was missing. We went back to look at the bike left behind and discovered it had a flat rear tire.

Our first assumption was that someone had a flat and borrowed my daughter’s bike (since the other bikes and ride-on toys were all still there–even my nicer mountain bike). We thought the owner of the flat tire bike might come back to claim it, and hoped they would also bring back my daughter’s bike. Just in case, we secured the stranger’s bike and brought my bike inside.

Here we are Wednesday, and my daughter’s bike is still missing. It is a purple and white 20″ cruiser, with fenders and foam tape wrapped around the handlebars, which was coming off. Unfortunately, I do not have a picture of it. The bike that was left here is a KHS FXT Sport, a blue mountain bike.

Unless someone comes forward, I suppose we will make a police report, which I was hoping would not be necessary, since we were hoping her bike was borrowed, and not stolen. Perhaps the bike that was left was also “borrowed,” and someone out there will be happy to know it is secure at our house.

Family Dollar Planned for Oakhurst’s “Big H Property”

    Decatur Metro | November 18, 2011 | 12:53 pm

According to Decatur Planning Director Amanda Thompson, the owner of the Big H property, Bruce Cohen, has submitted plans to the city’s Planning Office for a Family Dollar at the Oakhurst site, but does not yet have a signed lease in place.

The much-discussed Dollar General in that location also went through the planning stages, but a lease was never signed.

Wondering where the heck “the Big H Property” is?  Here’s a streetview for ya.

A Look at the MARTA Map Showing I-20 Transit Route Through Oakhurst

    Decatur Metro | October 4, 2011 | 11:26 am

The city commissioners (via Deputy City Manager Hugh Saxon) forwarded us MARTA’s presentation, which shows the heavy rail option that drops south of East Lake Station through the western edge of Oakhurst.

I’ve upload the entire deck for you to view for yourself HERE.

The initiative also has a Facebook page and a survey you can take to weigh in on the project.
