Winnona Park To Host State Candidate Forum Tomorrow

Decatur Metro | September 15, 2008

Over on the Oakhurst Message Board, DeKalb Superior Court Judge Candidate, A. Thomas Stubbs, Esq., announces a Candidates Forum at Winnona Park Elementary School on September 16th at 7pm.

Present will be State Representative Stephanie Stuckey Benfield and State Senator David Adelman, along with their respective opponents, Ken Quarterman and Altaf Galeyev.  Decatur City Commissioner Kecia Cunningham is scheduled to moderate.

I’m sure all the Winnona Park folks are already well-aware of this event, but for those of us who don’t live in the neighborhood or who have been uncerimoniously declined from joining their list-serv without even an explanation, it may be of interest.

They're Filming at the Courthouse!

Decatur Metro | September 15, 2008

Who is they?  We don’t know! (UPDATE: We do now!  Check the comments!)

Cub reporter Scott sends in a dramatic pic taken this morning in front of the DeKalb County Courthouse.  (uh…the old one, not the new one)  Unfortunately, no one would tell him what was going on, though he’s betting on a generic legal movie-type moment where a young boy exits yelling “Innocent!  Innocent on all counts!”.

Anybody clued in?

Oh, and is it just me (and my Jurrasic Park upbringing) or does this pic also kinda look like two dinosaurs emerging from the trees set to reek havoc on the building?

Weekend Market Folks Taking Over Boswell Gallery

Decatur Metro | September 15, 2008

Final sneak peak from Linda…

The Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces, LLC is opening a co-operative art and artisan gallery in the former Boswell Gallery space at 153 Ponce de Leon Place.  They also plan to have a small art and handcraft market in front of the gallery on Friday and Saturday evenings.  Interviews for participating artists and artisans will be conducted during the last two weeks of September.  They are the folks who run the weekend market at the corner of Church & Commerce.  The website is www.affps.com.

Greene's Fine Foods to Open October 1st

Decatur Metro | September 15, 2008

Again from Linda…

Greene’s Fine Foods, offering Nuts, Candy, Gifts & Fun, is opening October 1 in the old Federal Building on E. Trinity.  They specialize in New Crop Georgia pecans but say they have a selection for everyone by offering the highest quality nuts, handmade candies, gifts and fun for the whole family.  Many of the products are handmade and all of the products are hand served.  Owners and brothers, Tommy and Phil Greene learned everything they know about the candy and nut business from their parents who have been in the business in Augusta for almost 25 years.  The website is www.greenesfinefoods.com.

Scooter Rentals Coming to Decatur

Decatur Metro | September 15, 2008

Asst. City Manager Linda Harris gives us a few sneak peaks at the upcoming October Focus.  Here’s the first…

Dad’s Zip Motor Scooter is opening on Church Street.  They offer scooter rentals by the hour, day and month.  Helmets and gas are included.  Grocery carts or saddle bags, GPS and dog carriers are also available.  They have six delivery and pick up locations throughout Decatur, Oakhurst Agnes Scott College, and the Emory area.  The website is www.dadszipmotorscooter.com.

As far as rates go, it looks like they have 3 plans, a monthly plan that allows you 8 rides a month for $10 an hour after a $50 membership fee, a “recreational plan” that allows you 8 rides a month for a year at $8 an hour after a $250 membership fee, and a “business plan” that allows 20 rides a month for a year at $6 an hour after a $600 membership fee.  Oh, and there’s a $35 one time membership fee.

Here’s the specific list of locations where they will drop off the scooters when rented.  I’m not quite sure which Church St. location listed will be their headquarters.
