Cemetery Woodlands Mulch Path Gets Axed

Decatur Metro | September 17, 2008

What Jim mentioned in a comment yesterday, the City Commission summary has affirmed: The Cemetery Master Plan was adopted yesterday WITHOUT the mulch path in the designated woodland area.

Many Glendale residents had spoken out against the path because it would invite people into the area, which abbutted their property.  But now, if there’s no access for pedestrians, I have to wonder what’s the point of spending the money to clean out all that kudzu?

UPDATE: City Hiring Professional Facilitator to Moderate 315 W. Ponce Discussions

Decatur Metro | September 17, 2008

This is an update to yesterday’s post regarding the city commission’s plans to rekindle conversations between the neighborhood and the 315 W. Ponce developer.

While the city commission’s original agenda called for the creation of a committee to hold talks between the two groups, it looks like instead, the commission has settled on hiring a professional facilitator to attempt the uneviable task of bringing the two groups to consensus.

“On a motion by Mayor pro tem Baskett, second by Commissioner Kemp, and all voting “aye”, the City Manager was authorized to engage the services of a facilitator at a reasonable cost for two meetings to continue conversations between the community and the developer regarding proposals for the redevelopment of 315 West Ponce de Leon Avenue.”

Dunwoody Blogger Wins City Council Seat

Decatur Metro | September 17, 2008

The votes are in and Dunwoody now has its first mayor and city council.  Among the elected is Dunwoody blogger, John Heneghan, who operated the Dunwoody North blog, which argued passionately for city-hood, until recently when he converted it into his personal site when he decided to run for office.

Over on his site, Heneghan explains how he won two-thirds of the vote, even though he didn’t put up a single yard sign (while his opponent littered the neighborhood with them) and never excepted donations.  At the risk of sounding like an Obama campaign shill, Heneghan’s election is an interesting example of how the internet has changed how both local and national politics is played.  And at least on the local level has closed the money gap, so that any one with a passion for their town has a chance of winning an election.

Ah…the sweet, pungent smell of democracy.

Congrats John!  Good luck with your new city.  And even more luck working with the county!
