315 West Ponce Developer and Residents Continue Discussion on Pending Development

Decatur Metro | March 15, 2013

Ralph has a great write up over on Patch about the continuing discussion between Carter, the developer of the 315 West Ponce project, and surrounding concerned residents.

Since the last meeting a couple of weeks back, the developer has made a few concessions according to the article, including 235 apartments instead of 242 and 527 parking spaces, instead of 548.  Additionally…

Carter also tiered the nine units facing Montgomery Street, so that only three stories directly face the street, and removed balcony lights.

The developer agreed to paint the parking garage to match the colors of the apartments. But Gannon said that’s not enough and that facades and trellises need to be installed on the deck’s upper levels.

Like the last time this site was considered for development, surrounding residents remain concerned about traffic flow and shared parking.

If the plan is approved at the March 22nd meeting of the Downtown Development Authority, Carter can start applying for building permits.

Bill Floyd Endorses Scott Drake for Decatur City Commission Seat

Decatur Metro | March 15, 2013

Scott Drake’s campaign just sent out the following announcement…

Former Decatur Mayor Bill Floyd announces his support for Scott Drake for City Commission in the upcoming Special Election. “I have worked with Scott for the past 15 years. Scott is committed to Decatur and its neighborhoods. Scott has the experience and vision our community needs to take advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges that we will face as we move forward,” said Bill Floyd in his endorsement. Mr. Floyd resigned from the City Commission in January 2013. “Mr. Floyd’s approach, personality, actions, and service have shaped our city and we owe him a great deal of gratitude for his service. I am excited to have the endorsement of former Mayor Floyd and, if elected, I look forward to working with him, the current Mayor and Commissioners, our great City staff, and my neighbors,” said Scott Drake.

Decatur 2013 Development Plans Part IV: Avondale MARTA Station Development Back From Dead

Decatur Metro | March 15, 2013

avondale marta map

By this point, the Avondale MARTA Livable Centers Initiative report sitting on a shelf at Decatur City Hall must be pretty dusty.  It celebrated its 10th Birthday last year.

But this is Decatur 2013, where it seems that every single large development that was buried by the recession, is crawling back out of the ground, growling, “Permits, Give me permits.”.  And here’s the latest sighting, courtesy of the Atlanta Business Chronicle – “Avondale Project Would Lift Decatur“.

Again the full article is behind a paywall, but the main takeaway from the article is that MARTA is in serious talks with the City of Decatur, to the point where Asst. City Manager Lyn Menne tells ABC that they hope to have an agreement with MARTA in place by July.

Another interesting thought from Ms. Menne from the piece – residents of the proposed development could easily bypass the pedestrian moat that is College Avenue using the MARTA pedestrian bridge and then stroll down Sycamore to downtown Decatur.

Long-Distance Runners! Traffic! Publix Georgia Marathon This Sunday

Decatur Metro | March 15, 2013

marathon map

The Publix Georgia Marathon hits the streets of Atlanta/Decatur this Sunday, so depending on whether you’re looking to cheer on runners or just avoid traffic, you’ve now been alerted/warned!  Based on this road closure timing list, it seems like most of the Decatur route will be closed from around 7a-11:30a.  Or there’bouts.

The city’s Decatur Minute blog is urging residents to turn out in droves wearing green (to celebrate St. Publix Day) so that Decatur can again be in the running for “best cheering section” prize money that will benefit Decatur Active Living programs.

Full map available for viewing here.
