Quit Your Rumor-Mongering! 5th Avenue 4/5 Academy Construction Still on Track

Decatur Metro | January 5, 2011

From a “construction update” included amongst the documents for next week’s Decatur School Board meeting…

New South continues to assure CSD that they are on schedule and the school will be ready for opening day. Hopefully with all of the activity around the site, the rumors about the building not being ready will finally stop.

In November and early December the structural steel was installed. With the steel in place the contractor was then able to pour the 2nd and 3rd floors. The multi-purpose room floor was poured earlier in December and the masons have been busy installing the block walls in this area. Toward the end of this week the contractor hopes to pour the ground floor and that will be the last major concrete installation.

The weather looks good over the next two weeks and this will give the contractor time to place more of the roof decking, pour the slab and start laying out the interior and exterior walls. The mock-up of the exterior finishes has also been completed and will be reviewed and approved by CSD this week.

“Run with the Dogs” This Saturday

Decatur Metro | January 5, 2011

From Decatur’s Active Living Dept blog “Be Active Decatur“…

The annual Decatur Booster Club “Run With the Dogs” is this Saturday, beginning at 9am at Decatur High School. The race is part of the Team Decatur Grand Slam Fitness Challenge, so get out your running (or walking) shoes and have a fun morning being active. And no, you don’t have to bring a dog!

The 5K run begins at 9:00 am, rain or shine. Registration will take place in front of Decatur High School beginning at 8:00 am. Decatur High School, Renfroe Middle School, Glennwood Academy and City of Decatur elementary school students, parents, alumni, friends, neighbors and runners of all levels are invited to participate. Runners are invited to run with their dogs in a special group.

All proceeds will be used by the Decatur Bulldog Boosters to help fund the sports programs at Decatur High School and Renfroe Middle School.

The race will begin and end in front of Decatur High School on North McDonough Street in Decatur. Parking is available in the upper parking lot off Howard Avenue.

Farm Burger Makes Another National “Best Burger” List

Decatur Metro | January 5, 2011

Farm Burger, along with Buckhead’s Holeman & Finch, seem to be racking up the burger accolades this year.  And not just around Atlanta.

The latest comes from the well-known “Serious Eats” blog, which places Farm Burger’s burger among the likes of national classics like California’s In-and-Out Burger.  Here’s the Farm Burger write-up, from Serious Eats’ Atlanta corespondent…

Tucked away in a trendy Atlanta suburb, Farm Burger’s hook is their eco-friendly mentality: from locally-raised, grass-fed, antibiotic- and hormone-free cows to the garden-fresh veggies, all the way down to compostable containers. Yes, it’s a burger joint that locavores can feel good about, but there’s plenty for carnivores to sink their teeth into as well. Build your own burger from an impressive toppings roster or go with one of their Blackboard Burgers. I decided to work up a Number Six on ‘em (insert your favorite Blazing Saddles quote here): house-cured bacon, pepper jack cheese, salsa verde, and a sunny-side-up egg, all bookended by maybe the best bun I’ve ever had. I don’t know about that cow’s carbon footprint, but I can say it made for the best burger I ate this year.

Thanks to FMFats for pointing this out!

Decatur’s “Drinking and Voting” Proximity Law

Decatur Metro | January 5, 2011

I found this in the city code while looking for the “open container” ordinance….

Licensees may sell alcoholic beverages on election days, provided that such sale is not within 250 feet of any polling place or of the outer edge of any building within which such polling place is established on primary or election days. The limitations imposed by this section shall be in effect beginning with the opening of the polls and ending with the closing of the polls.

(Code 1967, § 4-21)
