Signs of a Post-Snowpocalyptic Decatur

Decatur Metro | January 12, 2011

Photos of empty grocery shelves have gotten some of us thinking that this could be the end of post-industrial society as we know it.  Honestly, a life without Cheetos and fudgesicles hardly seems a life worth living.

But what are some other major indicators of a post-snowpocalyptic world? I only ask because I need to know when it’s time to grab the baby and the bourbon and head for the hills (aka, the North Georgia “mountains”).

Is it hungry children chasing cats through our streets?  Grown, sober men turned away from a shuttered Brick Store in tears?  Kids banging on the doors of the Decatur High pleading to be taught?

When will we know that Decatur has gone from bad to totally nutso?

Decatur Road Conditions Open Thread: Wednesday Edition

Decatur Metro | January 12, 2011

So, I wasn’t sure if I was going to put another one of these up today, but so far this morning I’ve been hearing really mixed things about the roads.

MARTA is now running buses on a limited schedule and the mail, UPS and FedEx trucks are back on the roads delivering mail and parcels to shut-in residents starving for human contact.  (“Hey, thanks for the package.  Want to come in for some hot cocoa and some cookies?!”)

So road conditions must be improving, right??

And then a Tweeting road warrior like Thomas Wheatley splashes cold water all over my revived expectations…

Today is the worst for roads. Stay off em. Ice everywhere.

All this leads me to believe that it’s really a mixed bag out there and a post like this is necessary to help folks stay on the clear roads and away from the stretches of arctic tundra.

Winnona Park Elementary Receives State’s Highest Honor for CRCT Scores

Decatur Metro | January 12, 2011

CSD’s Bruce Roaden forwards the announcement…

Winnona Park Elementary School Awarded Platinum Award for the Greatest Gains in CRCT Scores

The Georgia Department of Education and the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement recognized Winnona Park Elementary School as being one of 46 Georgia schools whose students made the most gains on their CRCT scores from the 2008-2009 school year to the 2009-2010 school year.

In order to qualify for the Platinum Award (the highest honor given) for greatest gains, Winnona Park met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) three years in a row, had more than 35% of students exceeded standards, and was in the 98th percentile of Georgia schools that made the greatest gains in the meets and exceeds levels in the CRCT.
