Quit Your Rumor-Mongering! 5th Avenue 4/5 Academy Construction Still on Track
Decatur Metro | January 5, 2011From a “construction update” included amongst the documents for next week’s Decatur School Board meeting…
New South continues to assure CSD that they are on schedule and the school will be ready for opening day. Hopefully with all of the activity around the site, the rumors about the building not being ready will finally stop.
In November and early December the structural steel was installed. With the steel in place the contractor was then able to pour the 2nd and 3rd floors. The multi-purpose room floor was poured earlier in December and the masons have been busy installing the block walls in this area. Toward the end of this week the contractor hopes to pour the ground floor and that will be the last major concrete installation.
The weather looks good over the next two weeks and this will give the contractor time to place more of the roof decking, pour the slab and start laying out the interior and exterior walls. The mock-up of the exterior finishes has also been completed and will be reviewed and approved by CSD this week.

I hadn’t heard any of those rumors, but it’s still nice to get confirmation that things are on track. Given the stakes, I already thought that there was almost chance that things would entirely fall through. But this means that there is a much lower chance of what I was worried *could* happen–that there is a crazy rush at the end to put things together, with literal and metaphorical lose ends making the facility sub-optimal when classes start, e.g., your occasional pile of rubble in the corner of the teacher’s lounge, or AV equipment not yet installed, etc.
oops–make that “almost NO chance that things would entirely fall though.”
I haven’t heard rumors either, just questions from from folks who weren’t around for previous school construction. In my experience, the building contractors finish their work on time. But there’s lots of other stuff that needs to be in place that is not the responsibility of the contractor. That’s w. Given
Whoops. Slippery thumbs.
End of last post should be:…..That’s what may not be done completely before the students arrive. Given full plates of busy staff.,it might take a transitional year or two to completely settle in. a parent of a child in the transitional ywar
…Parents of children in the transition period might not love that but at least much of the instructional element of the school is moving intact and the feel of a new school will be fun.
