Decatur Schools To Only Make Up One Snow Day – On March 14th

Decatur Metro | January 24, 2011

Tammy sends the link from Superintendent Phyllis Edwards’ letter to parents regarding making up the week snow-days we endured a couple weeks back.

Here it is in full…

The inclement weather experienced January 10-14, 2011 affected all of us in important ways. This extraordinary circumstance surprised the district and the metro Atlanta area.

The only single-day available in the second semester calendar is March 14, 2011. This day was scheduled as a professional learning day. March 14, 2011 will now be a school day for students.

Wild Heaven To Brew in Avondale Estates

Decatur Metro | January 24, 2011

From the city of Avondale Estates “City Happenings” email…

It’s official! Wild Heaven Craft Beers has signed a lease on an 8,000 square foot building at the end of Maple Street next to the MARTA tracks with plans to renovate the vacant facility into a world-class brewery in Avondale Estates. Congratulations!

“We’re hoping we can be a part of reinvigorating the downtown, especially in the wake of (the Publix development) falling apart,” said Nick Purdy, president of Wild Heaven Craft Beers. “Our brewery is meant to be a destination, with tours, tastings and live music – so we hope to bring lots of people into Avondale in the coming years.”

Decatur Metro | January 24, 2011

Trish found this dog wandering down Derrydown Way between Columbia and College this morning.  She adds “She very sweet and submissive, but was terrified; I don’t think she’s been loose much before because she kept trying to get in everyone’s fence.”

If you recognize this dog, you can contact Trish at trish@hoffshouse.com.  Thanks!

Decatur’s Artisan Residents Sue Developer Over Construction Defects

Decatur Metro | January 24, 2011

Wow.

Kyle sends in this article from Fulton County’s Daily Report detailing a lawsuit that residents at Decatur’s downtown Artisan condo have filed against the property’s developer, general contractors, four sub-contractors and vendors over a number of “alleged construction defects.”

What sort of defects?

The association claims the building is plagued with leaking, cracking stucco; failed waterproofing barriers; problems with the rooftop swimming pool and a system meant to pipe out water leaking into its liner; poorly installed and constructed windows; and several other problems.

The article goes on to detail some of the biggest complaints from residents and has quotes from attorneys on both sides of the issue.  In closing, the plaintiffs’ lawyer notes that the Artisan “is a great community and these are correctable problems. It’s just a matter of who’s going to pay for it”
