City Proposes Keeping Glenlake Pool Open Weekday Evenings Through August

Decatur Metro | January 18, 2011

Last year, many parents expressed disappointment after it was learned that Decatur’s public pools would close for the calendar year in tandem with the first day of school in early August.

In response, the city of Decatur decided to keep the kid-oriented McKoy pool open during the day through the month.   Now the city’s Active Living Department is considering also keeping the city’s Glenlake pool open on weekdays in the evenings from 4p-8p through Labor Day, according to a note from Decatur Active Living Director Greg White (page 11 of City Commission meeting materials).

The extended hours, along with the need for additional lifeguards at Ebster Pool (which will still close at the end of July) and winter maintenance, will cost the city roughly $18,000, according to White’s note.

The Decatur City Commission will take up this new, proposed pool contract at tonight’s meeting.

Smile. We’re on a Georgia Tech Syllabus!

Decatur Metro | January 18, 2011

A cursory glance at my site statistics for the day revealed a new referrer that I’d never seen before: gatech.edu.

I clicked over and low and behold, DM is on the syllabus for Georgia Tech’s CS 4472/6470: Design of Online Communities class.  And not only are we on the syllabus, but DM, and especially its comments, round out the intro class along with an interview with Robert Putnam of “Bowling Alone” fame, the popular Meetup.com and an article titled Virtual Communites are Communites: Web Surfers Don’t Ride Alone, which I’ll now have to read.

How I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall of that classroom this evening to hear a classroom of students dissect our little online community and what it may or may not exemplifiy.

Dare I say, this is just as cool as winning a Creative Loafing or Atlanta Magazine “Best of Atlanta” award!
