New 5th Avenue Site Plans Now Online

Decatur Metro | March 18, 2010

Old Fifth Avenue Site Plan

New Fifth Avenue Site Plan

The new site plans for the Fifth Avenue 4/5 Academy are now online!

The old and new site plans are above.  You can either click the pic itself for a larger image view, or you can go straight to the PDF, which allows for really obsessive zooming.  The biggest changes since the last go-round?  Lots more street parking and a smaller school footprint, which allows for more green-space on the site.

There are also site plan PDFs available for the ground floor, main floor and upper floor of the actual building.

Check it!

Pedicab Profiled

Decatur Metro | March 18, 2010

Creative Loafing’s red fox of journalism, Thomas Wheatley, profiles Decatur’s Mike Gerke of Easy Living Pedicabs in its latest issue.

Here’s a sample question…

Red Fox: What was it about Decatur in particular?

Gerke: One of our criteria was it had to be bike friendly, had to be year-round bike climate, and had to have the infrastructure that you could be car-free if you wanted to be. We choose to be car free, but does the city allow it? At the time, it looked like Atlanta had pretty decent mass transit, had buses and trains that allowed bikes. It wasn’t a bike friendly community as a Boulder, Colo., Davis, Calif., or Seattle. But it had everything else. So with our education background we thought it’d be nice to move in Atlanta and help them become more of a bike friendly city. And that’s our passion is to get people riding on bikes. A lot of times we use the pedicab to show people you can ride on Peachtree and Marietta. And if you don’t believe me, jump on the cab I’ll show you.

Should CSD Raise the Millage Rate Instead of Furlough Teachers?

Decatur Metro | March 18, 2010

An AJC article from late yesterday – recaping the Decatur School Board budget meeting on Tuesday – quotes one Decatur resident upset that the Board isn’t considering raising the millage rate (read: raising taxes) instead of furloughing teachers for three days in the coming school year.  In a comment last night, Karass agreed.

I’d like to get an unofficial read on this again, because when I asked at the end of 2008, 70% of those responding to a DM poll had some concern about tax levels in the city.  And things weren’t looking all that bad budget-wise at that point.
