Decatur Metro Launches Local Advertising!

Decatur Metro | November 23, 2009

As you may have noticed, Decatur Metro now sports a new section in the right sidebar that features local sponsors/advertisers.

That’s right!  Decatur Metro is now offering advertising opportunities to businesses looking to gain exposure to a local Decatur/Atlanta audience.  If you’re a business interested in learning more about advertising on DM, stop by DM’s new “Advertise” page or shoot me an email at and I will be happy to forward along our ad-rate sheet.

This has been a huge undertaking and I want to thank my first advertisers, the DDA, Little Shop of Stories, Decatur First Bank, Heliotrope and The Wren’s Nest, along with my wife and the great folks at Lampe-Farley Communications, who helped get this months-long effort off the ground.  There is a real desire among many local businesses for an outlet to advertise to their target audience at a reasonable price.  Decatur Metro hopes to fill that niche and develop a sustainable business model for itself in the process.

Now, just a couple of housekeeping items.  With the addition of this new section in the sidebar, I’ve had to make a few adjustments on the site.

If you’re going to have any chance of snagging free tickets to Little Shop’s Neil Gaiman event at ASC’s Presser Hall on December 14th at 6pm, you better read this post right now.

And yes, Gaiman will be signing books – but only one per person. Actually it’s two person, but only if one is purchased at Little Shop!

Four Car Accident at College Ave & New Street Yesterday

Decatur Metro | November 23, 2009

Stacy tweeted about College being blocked yesterday afternoon and Lance sent in an email this morning about “a bad wreck around 5pm yesterday @ College/Commerce”.

Decatur PD, being the responsive bunch they are, provides us with the details this morning….

…a 4 car accident did occur at the intersection of E. College and New Street on 11/22/09. The “at fault” motorist failed to maintain lane and struck another vehicle. That vehicle subsequently struck an embankment. The “at fault” motorist rear-ended another vehicle and that vehicle rear-ended another the vehicle. Motorists 1, 3 and 4 were treated and released at the scene. An occupant of one of the vehicles complained of injury and was transported to the hospital.

Once again, thanks to the Decatur Police for keep us all informed!

CSD Board Approves School Calendar Changes for 2010-2011

Decatur Metro | November 23, 2009

Superintendent Phyllis Edwards sent out a note this morning announcing that the Board of Ed recently approved significant changes to the 2010-2011 school calendar.  The note can be read in full after the jump.

Here are links to both the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011calendars (both PDFs) so you can view for yourself.

At first glance at both schedules, the major changes seem to be that the school year starts a week earlier in August and there are now full weeks off in September, February and around Thanksgiving.

“Hooray For Clay” To Open in Old Spencer Tire Co. Space

Decatur Metro | November 23, 2009

As my wife observed yesterday, this latest addition to Decatur must have involved some serious clean up.

An “Hooray For Clay” sign has been erected over the old, long vacant “Spencer Tire Co.” location on E. Howard Ave.  The new ceramics studio already has a website, which exclaims…

Hooray for Clay is a working ceramics studio and gallery specially designed to provide families the perfect opportunity to experience the creative possibilities of clay.

No matter what the occasion, Hooray for Clay has the facilities, and instructors to help your group or family get creative, de-stress and have fun.

The website also notes that the studio will open some time in the new year.

Very glad to see another space filled along this great commercial street!
