Suspect Chased Through Scott Park By Decatur Police
Decatur Metro | August 19, 2009Nancy wrote in last night…
Today, August 18, my grandsons and I were in Scott Park behind the Rec center around noon when a young man was running through the play area apparently from the Police as a squad car streaked through the library driveway in pursuit. One of the nannies at the playground said he had a gun. All parents and nannies made a run for the children’s reading room of the library. Word spread soon after that the man running had climbed into a treehouse on the property behind the playground and was apprehended by the DP.
She later followed up with this…
I called the police, but the person answering the phone could not tell me if the perp had a gun.
I’ve been trying to get confirmation of this by DPD, but have yet to hear back. Will certainly let you know when I do.
UPDATE: Decatur PD has now confirmed that the suspect DID NOT have a gun.
Hiding in a treehouse? Seriously?
Perps evidently watch too many cartoons. That would work on Sponge Bob Squarepants.
I think I know the treehouse in question. Have you seen that sucker? It is WAY up high in a huge tree. Check it out. Stand at the play gym and look at the house bordering the playground to the east. Then look up.
Good Afternoon. The suspect who was chased by Decatur Police Department officers through Scott Park yesterday was NOT armed. The suspect had fled from a traffic stop on Sycamore Street. Hope this alleviates any fears caused by the erroneous information. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to call me.

Deputy Chief Lee,
How do you know that the suspect didn’t throw the gun in the woods?
I spoke with the nanny in the park that saw the suspect and she was sure she saw a gun.
Thanks.
I trust the police to know if there was a weapon or not. They are trained to watch for things like throwing weapons down. They’ll even see a tiny baggie of drugs if it’s thrown. And, they will thoroughly search the premises for both. BTW, how close was the nanny?
The nanny said she was within 20 feet from him and saw a gun sticking out of his pocket.
Perhaps the police can comment on what the object was. Did the nanny tell the police what she thought she saw?
so who knows what happened at the corner of N.Decatur and Church St this afternoon? Apparently the road was blocked and there were police cars and a helicopter…
You’ll have to ask DeKalb Police. It’s their territory.
I’d like to find out. I am seriously having second thoughts about letting my child ride her bike home from Glennwood. This is too close to home for me.
According to a friend who works on Church Street, there was a possible bomb scare/threat/abandoned package today at Nalley BMW, thus the police activity there. I don’t mean to be so vague, but he didn’t know the details, hence my not-very-specific description of what happened.
Hmmm. I guess all I really know is that something happened at Nalley BMW that required a lot of police response.
Breaking news…
DPD has made an arrest in the carjacking at the entrance to McKoy park last month.
“One of the nannies at the playground said he had a gun.”
Honestly, I don’t think nannies should carry guns. I mean, how bad are your kids?
: D
According to a friend that allegedly witnessed the scene, the man did not have a gun. He was just excited by the police and squad car.
Well played, sir.
I’m confused. Are we upset at the perp for running, the police for pursuing or are we so naive that we are shocked at the idea that many of the thugs out there are armed?
In my case, I’m still giggling that he might have hid in a treehouse. Although the fact that he might have had a gun there is sobering.
If we had better treehouse control laws, then criminials like they couldn’t have such easy access to them.
Unfortunately, under today’s laws, anybody who wants a treehouse can get one. There isn’t even a background check. Even common sense regulation gets nowhere with our legislative bodies bought and paid for by the infamous NTA (National Treehouse Association).
And don’t give me that whole ‘it’s protected by the constitution’ baloney. It’s a fact that children who live in homes with treehouses are 10x more likely to have treehouse related injuries than those without treehouses. The whole thing is just ridiculous.
Obama should appoint a treehouse czar to deal with this serious, but commonly overlooked, issue.
Then, after, he can appoint a swimming pool czar…they are more dangerous to children than handguns.
Oh, this wasn’t really a treeshouse issue? Nevermind.
