“Elect Kyle Williams” Website Goes Live

Decatur Metro | June 10, 2009

Kyle Williams just sent out a note announcing that his official city commission run website, ElectKyleWilliams.com, is now up and running.  The site features a 3 1/2 minute YouTube video of Williams detailing his campaign platform, a bio, and ways that you can follow and contribute to his campaign to be District 2′s new city commissioner.

Read Kyle’s note to supporters after the jump.

P.S. Carl beat Kyle to sending me his press release.  :-)

P.P.S. Also, did you know that Kyle is a blogger?  ‘Tis true.

Agnes Scott’s “Beer Pong” Controversy Goes National

Decatur Metro | June 10, 2009

As DecaStan noted on Twitter yesterday afternoon, NPR’s All Things Considered featured a story by WABE’s Jim Burress yesterday, about Agnes Scott’s long time popularity as a filming location and it’s recent controversy surrounding the filming of the low brow straight to DVD film, “Beer Pong.”

The local blogs even got a shout out!

“They recognized we were upset, but I don’t think there was any policy change that they were considering because of it,” Hill says. “I think that making this public and being transparent about our concerns put some pressure on the administration.”

And pressure did come, in the form of blog items and newspaper editorials. Eventually, some alums withheld contributions – even swore off campus visits.

Sweet.

What’s Really Cracking DeVry’s Windows?

Decatur Metro | June 10, 2009

nobirdcrack

Rus sends in this pic of the latest crack to appear in the dreadfully noisy DeVry/1 West Courthouse Square building and notes…

Wonder how that could have happened? humm.. let’s see: There are no birds downtown anymore, especially no larger birds that could crack a window and the break is in very unlikely place for a bird strike.
Could it be that my source from the city was right after all and the cracked windows are caused by structural settling and not birds at all?
Can we please turn the recordings off now?!

Agreed.  Enough is enough.  Let’s get to the bottom of this once and for all.

First step…The last time we discussed these recordings a year ago, Carl reported this…

I addressed the City Commission on this issue tonight and learned that in fact no permit has been issued and no decibel tests have been conducted. Commissioner Kemp questioned how the building has been operating for over 40 years without this noisemaker. Ms. Merriss agreed to have the noise levels measured and see what can be done to address this situation.

So first question is, were the noise levels ever measured?

CSD Board Votes Unanimously For Option #13

Decatur Metro | June 10, 2009

CSD Mom’s blog quotes a message posted on the CSDparents Yahoo Group site from Don Calder that reports the CSD Board voted unanimously in favor of Option 13 last night regarding reconfiguration options.  No real surprise there.

According to the note, Edwards also addressed concerns about leaving Westchester vacant for the time being, explaining that it could be used as a buffer against “extraordinary enrollment increases” (read: annexation).

Also, here are some numbers that were thrown around…

The cost of renovating Fifth Ave is expected to be $8 million. The impact on the operating budget (as of 2013) should be approx $500 to $700K, which may require a millage increase of approx 0.5 to 1.0 mil. Both Dr. Edwards and CSD’s finance rep, Theresa Link, stressed that these are worst-case scenarios, however, and difficult to project.
