Another DHS Band Car Wash!

Decatur Metro | June 19, 2009

dhs_carwash09_4web

Marcia writes in and sends a nifty poster along…

Yes, it’s another DHS Band Students Car Wash!

Tired of the pollen residue, bug spatter, bird mess and cat pawprints on your car? Bring that shabby chariot to the Decatur High School Band Students car wash on Saturday 6/20. The kids will be sudsing up the sedans (and SUVs and minivans) in the upper parking lot at Decatur High School, Howard St. at McDonough, from 10 am to 4 pm. Your donation helps send DHS students to marching band camp in July. So, you can welcome summer in a sparkling clean ride, and look forward to seeing snappy formations and excellent musicianship in the fall when the DHS marching band takes the field at halftime.

Going to be out of town? The DHS band students have got you covered with another chance to clean that chrome on Saturday July 25.

Zombieland Trailer Released!

Decatur Metro | June 19, 2009

Ann writes in and lets us know that the first Zombieland trailer – with a quick shot of Abigail Breslin outside at the Gas ‘n Gulp – is now online.

As the trailer so poignantly notes, all this talk about a bad economy and climate change is distracting us from the real issue at hand: a rampant zombie population.

Free Guster & Rusted Root Concert in Candler Park Saturday

Decatur Metro | June 19, 2009

Children of the 90′s rejoice!

Joe notes that Red Stripe Mid-Summer Music Fest in Candler Park is tomorrow and this year will feature both Guster and Rusted Root.

And the best part of it is that it’s all FREE!  (Take that Ticketmaster!)  The first band takes the stage at 12 noon, so that gives you plently of time to pregame for Rusted Root at 7:15p and Guster at 9:15p.

Get all the details here.

Athens’ Georgia Theatre Burns

Decatur Metro | June 19, 2009

Photo from Red and Black

Jumping outside the city limits for a moment…

Robert writes in to report that “the Georgia Theatre in Athens has burned to the ground this morning.”

The news of the fire is all over Twitter this morning and the AJC has eyewitness reports.  As Paste Magazine notes, “The Georgia Theatre has been home to countless shows from notable Athens acts such as R.E.M., Pylon, The B-52s and Drive-By Truckers, as well as myriad national touring acts. The venue was set to host several bands at next weekend’s AthFest.”

There are no reports of injuries.

This tragedy will undoubtably affect many.  Musicians, preservationists, Athens-lovers, Georgians.  A sad day.

Play in the Street! Decatur Beach Party Tonight

Decatur Metro | June 19, 2009

Are you ready to slip into those flip-flops and head up to the Square this evening for the Decatur Beach Party?  As the poster above states, tickets are $10 at the door, but only $6.50 in advance at ticketalternative.com

A few details from my good friends over at the Minute…

The Reputations play Beach music at the Community Bandstand beginning at 5 p.m. and Terry Lee and the GTs begin playing at 8 p.m. on the Main Stage.

The organizing committee has made some changes this year, and both the sand area and the Boardwalk Games will be on Ponce de Leon Avenue, renamed “Ponce Fun Pier”. The main stage will be on the MARTA Plaza. This year’s event also includes Douglas Brake and The Sizzle Pop Fizz Band beginning at 5 p.m. on the “pier”.

Other new fun for 2009 includes a Bunji Jump for the children and a Photobooth where you can get your souvenir photo made.
