UPDATED: Roly Poly Building To Serve as Temporary Home for Decatur’s First Responders

    Decatur Metro | December 22, 2010

UPDATE: City Manager Peggy Merriss tells DM that no Decatur fire trucks will actually be relocated to the Roly Poly site, but instead will all be located at Fire Station #2 in Oakhurst.

Roly Poly will house four staff members, along with the “first responder Expedition truck (2 people) and the air and light truck (2 people)”, as Scott mentioned in the comments.

The new Decatur-Avondale Estates Patch site reports that while renovations are being made to Decatur’s Fire Station #1 along Trinity Place, two of the city’s fire trucks and some of its firefighters will relocate to the old site of Roly Poly sandwich shop along Church Street to service the northside of the city.

I guess if we can temporarily run city hall out of a meat locker, we can operate a fire department out of a sandwich shop, right?!

The city purchased the Roly Poly site back in October 2008 as part of the Decatur Cemetery master plan to widen the Church Street entrance.

Looks like the little ol’ Roly Poly building will serve one final function before it’s ultimately torn down.

    City Buys Roly Poly

Looks like the Cemetery Master Plan is moving right along.

Carl points out that last night’s City Commission agenda includes the following note: “Recommend authorizing the Mayor to execute documents to purchase 811 Church Street.”

Well, that would be the Roly Poly building.  And according to Carl “the Cemetery plan has always included removal of this building (as well as the “art shack” on Bell St)”.  A closer look at the plan shows that this building will be torn down in order to widen the Church St. entrance.

Cemetery Woodlands Mulch Path Gets Axed

    Decatur Metro | September 17, 2008

What Jim mentioned in a comment yesterday, the City Commission summary has affirmed: The Cemetery Master Plan was adopted yesterday WITHOUT the mulch path in the designated woodland area.

Many Glendale residents had spoken out against the path because it would invite people into the area, which abbutted their property.  But now, if there’s no access for pedestrians, I have to wonder what’s the point of spending the money to clean out all that kudzu?

How Do You Remove This Much Kudzu?

That will be just one of the questions addressed this evening at city hall from 6:30p-8p during the Decatur Cemetery Master Plan Meeting.

    Here are the details…

Monday, August 25, 2008, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This a workshop to discuss options for restoration of the 10-acre woodland area of the Cemetery property behind Glendale Avenue. Topics include removal of kudzu and other invasive plants, new plantings, stream bank protection and restoration, storm drainage, options for protecting and improving wildlife habitat.

There’s already been some vocal opposition for plans to include a mulch trail in the currently inaccessible 10 acres of woodland (see above pic) from adjacent Glendale residents. See the proposed path here.

David over at InDecatur did a great job of covering resident opposition to the mulch path at a meeting back in May.  In summary, it sounds like Glendale residents would rather have overlooks instead of trails into the woods.
