    Dunwoody Unveils New City Logo

    Decatur Metro | October 24, 2010

Since many of us here are big on dicussing city logos, I thought there might be some interest in the city of Dunwoody’s brand new branding.

From a press release posted on John Heneghan’s Dunwoody blog…

The unified brand is designed to evoke the recognizable and distinctive qualities belonging to Dunwoody to appeal emotionally to the City’s target audiences: residents, business owners, family and business travelers, and Metro-Atlanta visitors.

“The new brand is a representation of Dunwoody as a forward-thinking, passionate, caring, and fun community,” said Edie Damann, Dunwoody Marketing and PR Manager.

Champion Newspaper Profiles DeKalb Community Blogs

    Decatur Metro | April 10, 2009

Jonathan Cribbs wrote a front page story about DeKalb’s three most prominent local, community blogs in this week’s issue to the Champion Newspaper.

John Heneghan, Dave and I, all give our thoughts on the rise and importance of our county’s community blogs. Good reading if you don’t already get enough of us on a daily basis.

BTW, I’ve decided to retire the term “hyper-local” from my lexicon.  From here on out I will be employing “community” in its stead.  Why?  Because I’ve come to realize that the “hyper-local” descriptor doesn’t go far enough in describing these types of blogs.  In my estimation the unifying aspect of blogs like those profiled in the article is not just that they are more local-centric than the city dailies, but that they actively support their communities.  Our tactics may be different, but our motive is universal.

Its a small, but I think, important semantic change if you care about such things.

Dunwoody Blogger Wins City Council Seat

    Decatur Metro | September 17, 2008

The votes are in and Dunwoody now has its first mayor and city council.  Among the elected is Dunwoody blogger, John Heneghan, who operated the Dunwoody North blog, which argued passionately for city-hood, until recently when he converted it into his personal site when he decided to run for office.

Over on his site, Heneghan explains how he won two-thirds of the vote, even though he didn’t put up a single yard sign (while his opponent littered the neighborhood with them) and never excepted donations.  At the risk of sounding like an Obama campaign shill, Heneghan’s election is an interesting example of how the internet has changed how both local and national politics is played.  And at least on the local level has closed the money gap, so that any one with a passion for their town has a chance of winning an election.

Ah…the sweet, pungent smell of democracy.

Congrats John!  Good luck with your new city.  And even more luck working with the county!
