Candler Water Plant Don't Work Good

Decatur Metro | August 14, 2008

Yeah so remember the time when DeKalb residents were told that we needed to boil all of our water and lots of people didn’t shower or brush their teeth for two straight days?  Remember how Wheatley said he used astronaut shampoo to wash his wavy, red locks?  That was awesome…

So in regards to that whole fiasco, I’ve got some good and bad news…

The good news is that something like that shouldn’t happen again anytime soon for the same reason.

The bad news is that the county is paying upwards of $180,000 to RENT a diesel backup system, on top of the $165 mil we’ve already shelled out, to cover for the current fickle, sometimes defunct “high-tech” facility the next time it decides to power-off during a light shower.  Ah diesel…they sure don’t make ‘em like they used to, do they?

Oh also…if you’re like me, and are curious to know why the system failed, it had something to do with a “defect in the computer logic control”.  Now are we clear?  Good.  Will they be fixing this defect?  Who knows!

Promiscuous Decatur?

Decatur Metro | August 14, 2008

Maybe I’m just a little loopy today after our marathon comment sessions from yesterday…but doesn’t our Community Transportation tagline seem just a little dirty?

How about…”Decatur: We’ll sleep with anybody! ”  Marietta…I’m looking in your direction…

Decatur Book Festival Still Looking For More Volunteers

Decatur Metro | August 14, 2008

The Decatur Book Festival is still in need of volunteers for its Labor Day weekend festival. The city’s special events coordinator, Cheryl Burnette, sends along this note…

It takes hundreds of volunteers to put on a world-class book festival. Be a part of the annual AJC Decatur Book Festival by volunteering. We hope you will join us for this important event to Decatur and to the metro-Atlanta area. You will find a wide variety of volunteer opportunities to choose from at the festival, including Set Up, Close Down, Children’s Area, Book Signing/Author Talk Venue Support, and more. Visit www.decaturbookfestival.com for author information and a schedule of events.

For more information about volunteer opportunities and to sign up, please visit www.decaturbookfestival.com/2008/Participate/index.php (or click on the “Participate” link on the Decatur Book Festival website). You may also sign up to volunteer at the Decatur Book Festival by contacting Lee Ann Harvey at (678 ) 553-6548 or email .

I’m not sure which specific volunteer jobs still need filling, but the volunteer application lists a large variety of opportunities such as…stage leaders, greeters, talk/signing venue support, book market support, VIP reception assistant (I’ve gotta believe this one was already filled long ago), volunteer check-in…

I wonder why the DBF hasn’t posted this announcement on their own blog yet.

Ty Pennington Gets a Better Offer

Decatur Metro | August 14, 2008

According to the AJC’s Peach Buzz, Ty Pennington is backing out of his scheduled appearance at the Decatur Book Festival to appear on Oprah. Festival organizers are understandably upset.

Can’t say I’m personally that disappointed, but I can see why organizers would be. I’m sure he’d have been one of the biggest draws of the weekend.

But Pennington should know…Decatur never forgets! Boohahaha!

UPDATE: The official press release from the DBF (after the jump)hints at perhaps another big-name announcement in the next two weeks. Read the rest of this entry »
