Ann over at Mingei World Arts sends us some great news…
Mingei World Arts is thrilled to announce that we have raised more than $2300 to date — more than enough to open the doors to the Library in La Union, Mexico! Funds were raised through a benefit performance featuring Carmen Deedee and John McCutcheon at the Decatur Library on July 29 and from sales of hand-carved folk art reading figures from the carvers of the village. The event was co-sponsored by the Georgia Center for the Book.
Ann VanSlyke, one of the owners of Mingei, is off to Mexico on Monday. The Library inauguration is scheduled for August 20th. For this project, Mingei partnered with Libros Para Pueblos, an organization that creates libraries in rural villages in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. Mingei continues to take donations and still has some of these wonderful reading figures, and more are on the way. 20% of sales of these figures will be sent to the library in perpetuity to support and maintain its programs. The collection, including the newest pieces, will be featured during the Decatur Book Festival.
Donations to Libros Para Pueblos are tax deductible. For more information, visit their website at http://www.librosparapueblos.com. To earmark your donation for the La Union library, please donate through Mingei World Arts. Make checks payable to The Oaxaca Lending Library Foundation, with Libros Para Pueblos, La Union in the subject line.
Congrats Ann!
Fisher sends in this rather amusing sign from the “old school” Hi-Tech/Texaco gas station at the corner of Ponce/Candler.
What IS the deal with this place? If it wasn’t for the $4 gas prices on its sign, I wouldn’t even be able to tell that it was even still open!
The AJC reports on a meeting next Monday from 7p-8p on the DeVry campus to determine what to do with the massive property now that DeVry has decided to downsize to One West Courthouse Square.
Though the campus isn’t in incorporated Decatur, the property borders our Decatur Heights neighborhood. And from what I’ve heard, it was a big deal for the neighborhood when DeVry went in.
I can’t imagine what will be proposed to replace it. Maybe a Six Flags? According to the article its currently zoned industrial, but the university hasn’t yet asked to have the property rezoned. If you’re directly affected or interested in this potential development, now is the time to get involved.
More Brick Store news this morning…
An Atlanta Magazine blurb gives us the details on the “crosstown training” going on between Holeman & Finch and the Brick Store.
In it we learn that BSP bartender Miles Macquarrie will run the bar at BSP’s new spot, Leon’s Full Service, and that the Brick Store is now serving H&F Breads.
A definite read for Brick fans.
