Dog Found Wandering Down Derrydown Way

Trish found this dog wandering down Derrydown Way between Columbia and College this morning.  She adds “She very sweet and submissive, but was terrified; I don’t think she’s been loose much before because she kept trying to get in everyone’s fence.”

If you recognize this dog, you can contact Trish at [email protected]  Thanks!

  1. Maybe this is so obvious that I’m the idiot for even bringing it up, but did you check to see if she is chipped? Any vet’s office should be willing to check that for free.

    1. Not stupid. Trish followed up and wrote…

“she has been scanned and has no microchip. She is currently at Lifeline Animal Project which can be reached through Atlantapets.org. She was wearing a choke chain only.”

      1. Cool. I figured I didn’t know about microchips until I got a dog a few years ago so maybe it wasn’t common knowledge.

Thank you, trish, for looking out for the sweet girl. I hope she finds her way home, or to a new home!

  2. Lifeline’s awesome handlers report that she is well-socialized (once she calmed down), very loving and friendly. Her paws are a bit cut up (probably from running down the road), but she is very clean, and she has no dirt caked in her paws like an outside dog would. I’m hoping that perhaps she just got loose after a walk. I will be putting up flyers around the major intersections and in the Winnona park neighborhood. If you know anywhere else to post her picture or tell folks about her, please do. This sweet girl belongs to someone and really wants to go home.

  3. If they can’t find any owners, I’d possibly be interested in giving her a home! She is so precious!

    1. Nicole,

Contact me directly and I will let you know if anyone comes forward to claim her. If not, I will let the folks at Lifeline (the founding director is a friend of mine) know.

  4. Isn’t there a US-wide website where pets can be reported as lost?
before the dog is given a home, you should maximise chances of finding the legitimate owner.
when I was a kid, we lost our dog by leaving her behind at a pretrol station on a highway in the south of france – never found her back.
we were absolutely shocked and distraught for a long time. it give me the hump just thinking of it.
so assuming her owner(s) want(s) her back, do everything you can.

    1. Funny you should ask. A Decatur resident just put together a “lost pet atlas” website that I’m planning on adding to the sidebar in the next few days. I’ll still post about lost pets, but the map will keep folks up-to-date as to which pets are still lost or still haven’t found their owners yet.

  5. If you’re on Facebook, you can go to the Oliver Alert page and have him posted on there. They have thousands of facebook fans and it will get blasted all over the place. She looks a lot like my dog actually! Love the brindles.

  6. Having just gone through a missing pet trauma in the last two weeks (see DM posting from 1/7), i can recommend several websites where you can post found dogs and look for lost dogs:
    findofinder.com
    petfinder.com
    lostandpound.com
    ajc.com
    craigslist.com
    pets911.com
    petharbor.com
Also, take a picture to the local animal control, shelters and vets.
Thankfully we found our dog, but only because the lady that picked her up happened to see our signs. She had not contacted any websites or animal control or vets, and was trying to find our dog a new home because she already had three others.

  7. I’ve seen a lost dog flyer in Avondale, the flyer has a pic. I’ll check the flyer for similarities.

  8. I canvassed the area today looking for signs and saw nothing in Winnona park. I’ll probably hit Avondale tomorrow. I’ve posted on facebook and craigslist. Thanks, Deb, for the other online resources.

    1. I’m assuming you checked with Dearborn Animal Hospital? They’re so close…. Hope her owner is found, anyway.

  9. Owner was id’d and not interested in having the dog returned. Her new name is Toni and she is available for adoption through atlantapets.org. Contact Micky Blair and ref Toni.

  10. Owner lives on S. Columbia and not interested in having the dog returned. Her new name is Toni and she is available for adoption through application at atlantapets.org. Contact Micky Blair and ref Toni.

    1. That’s sad. I’m sorta curious how you found these folks if they didn’t want her anymore.

But more importantly, I sent Nicole, who showed in an interest in adopting Toni above, an email to let her know that she was available. Hope we can find her a home! If not, let me know and I’ll repost and notify everyone she’s up for adoption.

    2. That’s just heartbreaking. How can anyone just abandon a poor little creature who’s completely dependent on them? I know folk fall on hard times, but c’mon– send it to a shelter at least. I so hope someone will give sweet Toni a home…

    3. I am so sad, I saw that there were more responses to this story when I checked this morning and was optimistic that the owner and dog had been reunited. So much for my sunny outlook. This is so upsetting to me. If I ever lost one of my dogs I would be heart broken and miserable. It would tear me up thinking my dog was out there on its own maybe getting hit by a car or hurt by someone with bad intentions, etc. That is why we have shelters. If you can’t take care of your animal, there are tons of resources out there to help. I am really bummed out about this.

  11. This story gets curiouser and curiouser. After confirming (we thought) that the “owner”, who had been called about this dog by another neighbor on my street a few months ago, no longer wanted the dog, I got a call this morning from the shelter that another person has come forward claiming that this is her dog. This owner lives at 285 and Ponce de Leon. The shelter will check it out, and if there are any other updates, I will let y’all know. Oh. And she claims the dog’s name is Angel. So let’s hope for a good outcome for Angel/Toni/Pecan(original name given), and that if she doesn’t already have a great home and a desperate owner wanting to find her, that she will find one.
