Dine Out Tonight To Help Raise Reward in Henderson Murder

Decatur Metro | January 28, 2009

WABE reminded me on my ride in this morning that tonight is the night to dine out at participating Atlanta metro area restaurants and bars to help contribute to the Crime Stoppers Atlanta reward fund being offered in connection to the Standard shooting of John Henderson.

Over 70 Atlanta area restaurants are currently participating.  (See full list here)  Each are encouraged to donate 20% of profits from the evening to the fund, however any amount is gladly accepted.

According to a map on the Atlantans Together Against Crime website, these four Decatur restaurants are among them:

  • Raging Burrito
  • Twain’s
  • Universal Joint
  • Steinbecks

Tacqueria de Sol is also on the list, though the Decatur location isn’t mapped.  Can anyone confirm/deny the Decatur Tacqueria location?

Open Thread: State of the City

Decatur Metro | January 28, 2009

What does DM do when he drops the ball and can’t make an important city function?

He creates an open thread and hopes to piece the event together through comments and links to other sites!

So…what did the mayor talk about last night?  Annexation?  C-2 next to R-60?  Higher taxes?  Falling real estate prices?  Property tax assessment cap?  HOST?

18% Turnout to Vote For Doraville Annexation

Decatur Metro | January 28, 2009

OK, maybe I was wrong.  Maybe I was interested in the Doraville annexation and just didn’t know it.

18% turnout?

Wow.  That’s pretty lazy.  (Hmm…that’s kind of judgmental.  Might be better to call them a “passive electorate”.)

Oh, by the way, the iniative didn’t pass.

Trackside Doc Al's Father Passes

Decatur Metro | January 28, 2009

Robert Elrod, who was instrumental in organizing the recent Trackside fundraiser at Corner Pub, reports…

The owner of Trackside (Doc Al Czarkowski) father died yesterday at Dekalb. It seems impossible that all this could happen to one person, but it has.

This Saturday at 2PM at Turner Funeral home in Decatur, there will be a service for him…. Doc’s father was a welcome fellow whenever he was in town at the Trackside and many of the patrons knew him well. Since the fire, Doc has not been able to get to his email list from the Trackside, and we’d like as many folks as possible to be made aware.

My deepest condolences Al.

5th Earl Employee Fundraiser @ Parker's This Friday

Decatur Metro | January 28, 2009

Owners David and Brian have details on the much anticipated 5th Earl employee fundraiser…

As many of you know, the 5th Earl Market suffered severe damage due to a fire last week that started next door at Trackside Tavern. Thankfully, no one was injured; however, the damage is extensive. Due to the condition of our space, the 5th Earl Market will be closed for business until we are able to rebuild.

This rebuild will take several months, and one of the most important things to us is to retain our wonderful, hardworking and dedicated staff. Most of our team has been with us since we opened two years ago, and it is our goal to re-open with these same people, as they truly are the ones who make the 5th Earl experience what it is.

We will be hosting a fundraiser THIS Friday, Jan 30th from 5-9 pm at Parker’s on Ponce. 116 E. Ponce De Leon Ave. Decatur, GA 30030. They will be graciously donating a portion of the evening’s proceeds to the 5th Earl Market Employee Fund. Join us for a drink or bite to eat in the bar. We’ll all be there.

In addition, bartenders will be accepting checks on our behalf or donations can be sent via mail to:

5th Earl Employee Fund
Decatur First Bank
Attn: Ann Berg
1120 Commerce Drive
Decatur, GA 30030

Thank you all for your nice emails and calls-the support we have received has been
uplifting. We look forward to seeing you all on Friday.

Sincerely,

David & Brian
