Armed Robbery In Front of Kavarna Last Night

Decatur Metro | January 9, 2009

Andisheh does some digging for us and gets details on an armed robbery in Oakhurst Village last night…

A woman was robbed at gunpoint shortly before 1:00 A.M. in the middle of Oakhurst village.  DPD describes the suspects as two black males. They asked for money and a wallet.

No one was injured.

I also spoke to the person at Universal Joint who called 911 on the victim’s behalf. Apparently, she walked in to U-Joint after she was robbed. He told me the incident took place in front of Kavarna (707 E. Lake), which was closed for about two hours at the time of the robbery.

No one has been arrested.

A note on the Oakhurst Message Board states that U-Joint had noticed the individuals hanging around outside and called the cops, but “the incident occurred  before they arrived.”

CSD Reconfiguration Vote Pushed Up to January 13th?

Decatur Metro | January 9, 2009

Judd Owen writes in to let us know that if we’re reading the CSD Board of Ed agenda correctly, they have pushed up their vote to approve the recommended reconfiguration plan of the school system from March to January 13th.

If you’re new to the discussion, the plan to accomidate more students is to use portables at the elementary schools until 4th/5th grades can be moved to a new Renfroe addition and make Glennwood a K-3.  If the city were to approve annexation, Westchester would also become a K-3.

Originally, the schedule looked like this…

a. Superintendent presents multiple options to Board of Education
for February 10, 2009 meeting
b. Board of Education conducts informational sessions and public
hearings (if needed) end of February
c. Board of Education votes on action item March 10, 2009

But Judd points out that a “move approval of reconfiguration plan” is the second action item on the School Board’s January 13th meeting agenda.  The item is accompanied by a letter from the superintendent encouraging the board to accept the committee’s recommendation.  The financial impact is estimated at $25,000 for each portable and $3 million for the Renfroe “renovations to add 4/5″.

So I assume that this means that the Board of Ed vote has been pushed up two months to January 13th?  Right? Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

Agnes Scott and Emory Rank as "Best Value" Colleges

Decatur Metro | January 9, 2009

I recently used a slight increase in Agnes Scott’s tuition to vent my frustration on the general cost of college tuition throughout the country.  At the time I implicitly stated that my rant had nothing to do about Agnes Scott specifically, however due to the way the post was titled, I think I sent them a little more flack than originally intended.

So today, let’s note that they deserve a good deal of credit for their comparatively low tuition costs!  According to Princeton Review, Agnes Scott is one of the 50 “Best Value Private Colleges for 2009“.  Here’s part of the blurb that talks about value…

Despite the widespread rise in the cost of higher education, Agnes Scott has managed to keep its tuition low. More importantly, the school is committed to finding every way possible to provide both need-based and merit-based financial support to its students. Over 50 percent of students receive hefty financial aid packages, and if you need an extra year of school, it’s on the house (provided you’ve fulfilled your degree requirements and have a specific goal for another year of study). That’s right-the fifth year’s tuition is free.

Sounds like Agnes Scott does quite a bit to keep costs relatively low for its students.  That should definitely be commended!

Congrats should also be extended to Emory, which also made the list.  But since I didn’t inadvertently rail against them recently, they just get a simple mention. :-)  Check the full list here.

UPDATE:  Kiplingers rated Emory 9th in value among private colleges, according to an Emory press release.  Apparently its “value ranking” season!
