    City Buys Roly Poly

    Decatur Metro | October 21, 2008

Looks like the Cemetery Master Plan is moving right along.

Carl points out that last night’s City Commission agenda includes the following note: “Recommend authorizing the Mayor to execute documents to purchase 811 Church Street.”

Well, that would be the Roly Poly building.  And according to Carl “the Cemetery plan has always included removal of this building (as well as the “art shack” on Bell St)”.  A closer look at the plan shows that this building will be torn down in order to widen the Church St. entrance.

Does anyone know if Roly Poly will close permanently then or will it relocate?

Is Roly Poly moving or just closing? Maybe they could take over where Tossed was? Might be a bit high rent though…

Does anyone know if the owners wish to sell? Or will the city be declaring eminent domain?

Hey guys, I’ve got a note in to the city asking for clarification…hopefully we’ll hear something soon.

The city isn’t using eminent domain — haven’t done so in at least 25 years. Owner is a willing seller. We hope to work with the tenant and keep them in the downtown district.

Trust me — we feel the same way. I’ve left a message with the franchise owner who has strong family ties in Decatur.
