After a little confusion, Lyn follows up with a schedule surrounding the annexation issue.

Monday, December 1st at 7:30 p.m. Decatur City Hall — Public hearing on annexation options as part of the regular City Commission agenda

Monday, December 15th at 7:30 p.m. Decatur City Hall — Action item on annexation is tentatively planned for the City Commission agenda. Public comment will be taken on the agenda item. Any action taken by the city commission would be on which option to pursue and would not result in actual annexation.

Oakhurst Third-Graders Bring Politics Back to the Square

Decatur Metro | October 28, 2008

Third-graders will be participating in an age old tradition next Monday…bringing political life to the public square.

Can you identify the three branches of government and explain how they work? Are you able to describe how democracy began in America and its connection to Ancient Greece? If you ask a Third Grader from Oakhurst Elementary on November 3rd, they will be able to tell you.

To connect their learning to real life experiences, the third graders from Oakhurst are holding a voting rally on The Decatur Square on November 3rd from 11:30 am to1pm. As students learn that voting is both a right and responsibility of citizens in the United States, they will encourage local adults to go exercise their right to vote on November 4th. Students will remind Decatur citizens of those who were instrumental in our right to vote.

With a non-partisan approach, third graders will encourage adults to vote by carrying handmade signs; they will give speeches, perform songs, and cheer on the crowds. In addition, a polling place information table and map will be available to assist registered voters find their polling locations. Members of the Democratic and Republican campaigns will be present to offer information about their candidates. This is truly a hands-on learning experience for the Third Grade students at Oakhurst.

Rumor Proves True: Crescent Moon to Become Thumbs Up Diner

Decatur Metro | October 28, 2008

YourFavoriteWaitress is good enough to give us a detailed report on the future of Crescent Moon…

OK, Folks, Here’s the official update on the Crescent Moon saga:

The bad guys are gone and the good guys are back!!!

I just came from a meeting with Rob Atherholt, and the creme de la creme of the Crescent Moon crew. We met some new friends at this meeting, and we all came away feeling excited about the future of our little diner in Decatur.

The name Crescent Moon is tied up in legal red tape and could remain that way for some time.
Meanwhile, The Thumbs Up in Avondale had to close awhile back because of the city’s expansion or somesuch…anyway,

It’s a perfect alignment of time and circumstance for Rob Atherholt of Crescent Moon And Lou Locricchio of Thumb’s Up to join forces with another successful restaurant entrepreneur, Lisa Durham, and together with management partners Susan Wright and Wesley McConnell, and the Crescent Moon crew that you have known and loved for years, bring Thumb’s Up back to Decatur!! That’s right it’s official.

THUMB’S UP COMES TO CRESCENT MOON!!!
I wanted to post this here, because the support from this site has been strong and appreciated, and I know that everyone has been wondering what’s going on.
We all loved The Crescent Moon, and it being gone carries a sad note. I also know that Thumb’s Up is a great restaurant and it carries not only a similar menu, but the same high quality standards that we maintained at The Moon before Global took over ownership.
It’s the best of both worlds. We still have Rob, AND we now have Lou and Lisa and Wesley and Susan as well.

So watch the blog and keep an eye open for word of our grand re-opening. (Probably mid to end of November.) Then come on over and see some familiar faces and meet some new friends and chow down on some good food!!
It’ll be great to see your faces again.
Maggie

a pleasant post-script:
The shower tiles and mirrors on the walls (and the neon) are going to be removed and Lou’s wife Elizabeth is in the process of giving the dining room a much-needed face lift. YIPPEE!!

In case you’re unfamiliar with Thumbs Up and its selection, here’s their website.

Our Perceptual Biases

Decatur Metro | October 28, 2008

Whether we’re arguing the impacts of downtown development or trying to make sense of the new world financial crisis, the following list of perceptual human biases, written about in Taleb’s Black Swan and summarized here by David Brooks, always seem to shine through…

[Nassim Nicholas] Taleb believes that our brains evolved to suit a world much simpler than the one we now face. His writing is idiosyncratic, but he does touch on many of the perceptual biases that distort our thinking: our tendency to see data that confirm our prejudices more vividly than data that contradict them; our tendency to overvalue recent events when anticipating future possibilities; our tendency to spin concurring facts into a single causal narrative; our tendency to applaud our own supposed skill in circumstances when we’ve actually benefited from dumb luck.

Maybe that’s a big part of the reason why the random party-goer who speaks only in absolutes is always the most suspect in my book.  Unfortunately for you, that kind of self-doubt doesn’t usually make for the most entertaining blog.  ;-)

Early Voting Experiences

Decatur Metro | October 28, 2008

David pointed out this blurb in the AJC this morning about early voting downtown…

About 200 people were in line when voting started at the precinct on West Ponce de Leon Avenue in Decatur. But the building was open, so the early arrivers stood inside in a line that snaked down a hallway just off the lobby.

Peter McDade waited 45 minutes, arriving at 6:45 a.m. and walking out at 7:30 a.m.

“I thought it would be about an hour-and-a-half,” he said.

Altmod writes in to DM with her own account…

Early voting went VERY smoothly.  The line starts outside and snakes around inside.  It looks long and there were a ton of people voting but we only waited outside for 10 minutes and then inside for 20 minutes.  They were running a smooth operation (we filled out forms on clipboards and had our id’s verified while we were in line).  It went WAY smoother than usual–I usually vote at the Baptist church.  Very professional.  Indie Coffee House even put out a sign that reminds chilly line waiters that they sell hot drinks!  Vote early!
