The Impact of Small Increases in Black Voter Turnout

Decatur Metro | October 6, 2008

As I’m sure you know, today’s the last day to register to vote.  Hopefully you’ve been alerted to this in countless other places and have already taken action.  If not, you’re probably out of luck unless you get your application in the mail before the Post Office closes today.

In that vein, the great electoral projection site FiveThirtyEight has a great, new analysis on how a slight increase in Georgia’s black voter turnout (from its 2004 level of 25.4% to 30%) could make the presidential race mighty interesting in this traditionally red state.  As the post points out, if you think a 4-point increase is unreasonable, note that early voter turnout has been 40% black.

Of course, if Obama wins Georgia this way, its pretty much a sure bet he’ll have also won other southern states like North Carolina and Virginia.  So we wouldn’t really decide the election or anything.  However, it might spell trouble for the likes of Saxby Chambliss.

But Saxby’s still way ahead of Jim Martin in Georgia, isn’t he?

What’s that? Its now looking like a horse race?  Really?

Sounds like Saxby might have a little trouble right here in River City…

Vinson Gallery Closing

Decatur Metro | October 6, 2008

In another post, FM Fats reports that one of Decatur’s longest standing galleries, Vinson Gallery, is closing its doors on Halloween.  Its last show, entitled “Last Call” begins this Saturday.

How sad.  This just a few months after celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Stories like this, along with a 700 point drop in the Dow, has me thinking “Are we saying good-bye to another era of affluence?” If so, what does that mean for Decatur and all its high-end shops?

30030: Third Best ATL Zip Code

Decatur Metro | October 6, 2008

That’s according to the people’s pick in AccessAtlanta’s “Best of the Big A“.   We ranked behind Midtown and behind Cobb County’s 30339, which I might point out have much larger populations than the city of Decatur.

Also, Decatur’s Concerts on the Square was voted the third best free thing to do on a Saturday night, behind a “cookout with friends” (I thought Southerners said “grill out”?) and listening to free bar music.  The AJC’s top free thing to do on a Saturday night is to take in the sunset at the top of Stone Mountain…so apparently they don’t count the Park’s $8 parking fee.

This isn’t exactly new…but I don’t think I have posted on it.

BREAKING: Decatur Wins HOST Ruling, But It Still Ain't Over

Decatur Metro | October 6, 2008

First on Decatur Metro: The Georgia Supreme Court just overturned the GA Appeals Court’s decision that ruled in favor of DeKalb County and its greedy withholding of the 1-cent sales tax money that rightfully belongs to DeKalb’s cities (over $8 mil due to Decatur at last count).

The reason?  The Supreme Court thought the Appellate Court overstepped its authority in deeming the original contract between the county and the cities as “unconstitutional”, since the term “services” had never been defined by the Supreme Court (which is its job).  Or at least that’s how I read the legalese.

But since the low-level trial court didn’t originally rule on this case, its getting thrown back to the Appeals Court to reconsider it again…this time without the option of deeming the contract as “unconstitutional”.

Now I’m no lawyer (can’t you tell?), but this sounds like a huge blow for the county.  Any lawyers out there want to weigh in?

The full ruling can be read here (or you can just read the summary after the jump).

As to why you should care about this case, take a look at this old summary I wrote back when the GA Supreme Court heard it, or just take the mayor’s word for it when he says you have two options for lower city taxes: annexation or winning the HOST ruling.

Also, a HUGE shout out goes to Thomas Wheatley, who provided me with this info that I’ve been waiting on for nearly 6 months!

UPDATE: The AJC picks up the story.
