UPDATED: A report from Decaturish states that the pizza joint hopes to open in the next two weeks.

The new DaVinci’s location in Decatur says it will open this week, based on a reply posted to Facebook yesterday.   The pizzeria is located at 265 West Ponce de Leon Ave in the old Mellow Mushroom location.

Here’s a little more info on Zucca Pizza, which is taking over Zocalo’s old spot on the Square…

According to a 2007 Access Atlanta review of the local chain’s Kennesaw restaurant, Zucca is a low-key pizza joint that churns out authentic New York-style (more specifically Staten Island-style) pizza and other Italian standards (pasta, calamari calzones). Also, if the Decatur location is anything like Kennesaw, the wine list is reasonably priced ($5.50/$7.50/$9.50) and there is a decent draft beer selection available (12 on tap).

Also, a Zucca in Decatur might provide another late night option for those wandering the Square late in the evening/early morning. The Kennesaw branch is open regularly to 2am (midnight on Sunday) and provides a “wee-hours” menu, which offers pizza and other select munchies.

As a northerner, I’m very interested in judging for myself how well these transplanted New Yorkers have recreated the New York slice in the Deep South. (I don’t have an opening date yet) We know it’s all about the crust and sauce.

Now if only someone with the skills would consider opening an Italian pastry shop…
