Ride Along with DPD and Learn Emergency Response at Decatur’s Public Safety Academy

Decatur Metro | August 27, 2012

It’s sorta like a Decatur 101 for Decatur Police and Fire.   At least that’s how I would summarize it in one sentence.

Decatur Deputy Police Chief Keith Lee passes along this summary and application (Word)…

The Citizens Public Safety Academy (CPSA) is an exciting way to learn about police work and how the community can respond to emergencies. Through a well- prepared curriculum, taught once a week for 8 weeks, students will learn about all aspects of police operations. Academy participants will meet many of the men and women who serve in the Decatur Police and Fire Departments as they explain the functions of patrol officers, investigators, administrators, and firefighters. Academy participants will also learn how officers are trained and how one can protect against crime and fire hazards. Interesting demonstrations will illustrate the many skills and abilities police officers and fire fighters must have to effectively protect Decatur.

An important and exciting phase of the Academy is the opportunity to leave the classroom and view police work first hand by riding with patrol officers.

DeKalb City Residents See Mysterious Tax Increases, Mayors Want Answers

Decatur Metro | August 27, 2012

The AJC reports that DeKalb’s city mayors will attend a county budget meeting on Tuesday that will attempt to explain…

…Why DeKalb adjusted property tax rates for services like police, parks, roads and fire protection that cities can pay the county for or provide themselves, but not for those same services in the unincorporated area.

According to the article, Decatur residents saw an 11% increase in the specialized police services (K9, SWAT, etc…) that we still pay for, while County residents saw no increase in cost for those same services.  Meanwhile, Chamblee’s police rate went up 18%, and Dunwoody – who opts out of DeKalb Police entirely, saw an overall increase of 15%.
