Unnamed Bar Also Moving Into West College Commercial Space

Decatur Metro | August 9, 2012

Scott points to this Facebook page that announces the arrival of a new bar “to be named later” at the under-construction strip on West College Ave at Mead Rd.  The description on Facebook describes the spot as …

A neighborhood bar, nestled in beautiful Oakhurst in Decatur, Georgia. All we need is a name. And a license. But we need a name to get the license.

This unnamed bar joins “Corrina’s Corner”, a pet supplies store, as the second business to announce opening in this building.

Is West College is the new Ponce?! :-)

How the Netherlands Does Bike Lanes

Decatur Metro | August 9, 2012

We’ve received a couple of interesting cycling pics from overseas recently.  Here’s the first from Angelika with this description…

…with all the recent talk of bike lanes, thought I would send in a pic of a local street in Aalsmeer (near Amsterdam). Bike lanes in The Netherlands are always red brick. When no bikes are present cars can ride side by side encroaching into the bike lanes (as seen in the distance). When a bike is present, the car must stay behind the bike unless it is safe to pass (no oncoming traffic). Makes for very alert and conscientious road users. Can’t help but wonder how the traffic to and from Fifth Ave school would change if one of the local roads looked like this…

Midway Woods Resident Seeking Advice Regarding Empty DeKalb School

Decatur Metro | August 9, 2012

A concern resident writes in…

I would like to “educate” the community on the current status of one of DeKalb county’s abandoned, and forgotten, schools. That school is Hooper Alexander Elementary, a former school of the arts, located on Memorial Drive. The school backs up to the Midway Woods neighborhood.

Some of the activity that I have witnessed at the abandoned school is quite frankly shocking. Criminal activities have inflicted thousands upon thousands of dollars of damage to the school. Due to its vacancy the school has also become a “headquarter” for criminal activity. My residence has been burglarized twice during the past year, including [in late July]. The criminals drive down the street looking for driveways free of cars, then proceed to the school to park. They then jump the school’s fence in order to gain access into our residences, and leave as they entered after burglarizing our homes. I have contacted the county, but have yet to receive a reply. My hope is that your forum can provide my neighborhood with suggestions/advice about how to encourage DeKalb County to take action regarding this property. Please find attached a few recent photos of the former school.

Thanks for your help.

Cakes & Ale Repeats as Bon Appetit “Best New Restaurant”

Decatur Metro | August 9, 2012

Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh-Jennings look out.

Michelle points out that Cakes & Ale has again made Bon Appetit’s list of “Top 50 Best New Restaurants” for 2012.  Here’s the blurb explaining how C&A can be “new” again…

This one look familiar? In 2009, Billy Allin’s bistro made our list for smart, farm-to-table cooking. A move to a bigger space, a more ambitious menu, and an added bakery mean it’s list-worthy once more.

LOOK FOR

Wood oven-roasted squash and onion with scrambled eggs and trumpet mushrooms; Mississippi mud cake; lemon bar

WE LOVE

At the adjacent bakery’s lunch service, chef David Sweeney’s “good-for-menu” makes healthy food taste great.

Will they move again and try for the three-peat?!
