Decatur School Redistricting Public Hearing November 3rd
Decatur Metro | October 27, 2010UPDATE: Here’s CSD’s official note, with dates and times for both public hearings…
On November 3, 2010 at 6:00 pm the City Schools of Decatur will hold an Information Session regarding elementary attendance zones in the Edith Hambie Professional Learning Center at Central Office at Westchester (758 Scott Boulevard, Decatur, GA 30030). This session will be followed by a Board of Education Public Hearing at 7:00 pm in the Board Room at the Central Office.
For interested parties who are unable to attend the meetings on November 3rd, a second Information Session and Public Hearing will be held at the Central Office on November 16th at 6:00 pm followed by a Public Hearing at 7:00 pm.
A vote on elementary attendance zones is planned for the December 14, 2010 Board of Education Meeting.
Posted on the City Schools of Decatur website…
- November 3, 2010 Information Session – Elem. Attendance Zones (6:00 pm)
- November 3, 2010 BOE Public Hearing – Elem. Attendance Zones (7:00 pm)
- November 9, 2010 BOE Regular Monthly Meeting (6:30 pm)
I’ve got a note into CSD to confirm the second public hearing before the School board takes a vote on this and whether the actual vote will occur at the November or December meeting. Stay tuned.
If you’re new to this conversation, here’s a link to the previous relevant posts. Also, here’s a link to the 7 map options.

Supposedly few folks showed up at the Board Meeting that presented the options but did not include public comment. Not sure what that means, perhaps that community is overall ok with all the options. For folks with strong opinions, you probably should show up and state your opinion even if you also indicated it in other forums. Few folks attending sends a message of “folks are basically ok with our stated preference”. It makes it hard to complain later.
I think it was because it was a no comments work session.
Makes sense. So it’s all the more important that folks, if they feel strongly about any of the options, pro or con, speak up at one of the listening sessions. The other ways of commenting are fine too but there’s an immediacy and directness of in-person comments that are hard to duplicate otherwise.
Yes, I agree.
Based on email traffic, hallway discussions and playground convos, I think it’s a safe bet that there will be a sizable crowd on Tuesday.
Each map now contains a comment section near the bottom. Comments are submitted to the school board members.
I must say, with two teenagers in school and scars from the previous redistricting, I’m enjoying staying out of this one.
As long as the redistricting avoids creating “have” and “have not” schools, like we used to have, this will all work out fine.
Will these be held at Westchester? I looked at the website but it wasn’t obvious to me.
yes – public hearings will be held at Westchester.
best,
thomas

Is the meeting on the 3rd, which is a Wednesday, because ALL other meetings are on Tuesdays????
Did you just write Edith Hambie Professional Learning Center? love the bureacrat-izing of Westchester School…sheesh.
Not only that, it’s not very clear. Is it in the big auditorium/gym (far left-hand door then turn left), cafeteria (main or right-hand door, then turn right), or old media center (main door then go straight back and it’s on right). Or maybe it’s good for everyone to go in and wander around lost so they can view the classroom and common space since one of the options (7) is being described as a good one if Westchester has to reopen as school space.
