Tastings Closes Its Doors

Decatur Metro | September 14, 2009

A Decatur mom writes in that Tastings has closed and that they have a “sign up on their door saying thanks for the patronage, but we are now closed.

Kelly confirms…

Despite our best efforts, we were not able to attract the business that we needed in order to stay afloat in this struggling economy.

Thanks to all the Decaturites who supported us and on behalf of Deb and myself, it was a pleasure to get to know those of you who frequented Tastings. Best regards.

All the best to Kelly and Deb.

Georgia Chapter of Sierra Club Moving to East Decatur Station

Decatur Metro | September 14, 2009

Carl tweets that the Georgia’s chapter of the Sierra Club is moving from its Midtown location to East Decatur Station on October 1st.  Upon request, Carl forwarded me this newsletter that gives details.  Here ya go…

We have been at our current office location since 2003, and this space has served us well. The landlord, Midtown Two TSO (Simpson), has been very generous in offering us a modest price on this space, and lots of free storage space. However, we have received an even better offer on rent from East Decatur Station. The space will be much smaller than our current office, but we will have a lovely patio, large windows and a view of a nice greenspace behind our office. While the parking may be a little tight, we are right across the street from the Avondale Marta Station, so park your car, hop on the train, and come see us at our new digs: 743B E College Ave., Decatur 30030. Stay tuned for an announcement of our Open House.  Watch the Sierran and our website for details as they become available.

Carl notes the Open House will be October 22nd @ 6:30p.

Rep. Jill Chambers Cuts Off Fellow MARTA Committee Member’s Mic

Decatur Metro | September 14, 2009

Jim Walls reports on Atlanta Unfiltered of a heated altercation during a meeting of the MARTA Oversight Committee that ended with Rep. Jill Chambers cutting off the mic of Rep. Doug Stoner “mid-sentence”.

Here’s the money quote from Chambers…

“I can save you $400,000 right now,” Committee Chairman Jill Chambers told GM Beverly Scott. “As MARTOC chairman, I will not do business … or allow myself to be lobbied by anyone hired by this authority and paid with tax money.”

$400,000 down, $79,600,000 to go!

Decatur Walking Tours

Decatur Metro | September 14, 2009

Active Living’s Dan Magee mentioned this in a comment on Free-For-All Friday, but I followed up with him this morning and got a couple more details about the six walks included in the new “Walking Tours” brochure.  Here they are…

  • The “Mayor’s Walk” is a one mile walk around the downtown area.
  • The “Great Lakes Escape” is a 3 mile loop around the Great Lakes neighborhood.
  • The “Sycamore & More” walk is approx. 4 miles down East Ponce, Glendale and Sycamore.
  • The “Walk Around M.A.K.” is a 3 mile walk across the rail road tracks around McDonough, Adams and Kings Highway
  • The “Agnes Scott & Oakhurst” walk is 4 miles through Oakhurst returning to downtown on Commerce
  • The “To Wilton and Back” walk is a 2 mile down East Ponce in the Northwest area of the city
  • The map also features 34 points on interest throughout the city.

Maps are available at city hall and the Decatur Recreation Center.

My wife, dog and I have three standard walking routes: west on Ponce into downtown with a loop at the Square or thru Old Decatur, a walk through Clairemont Heights up to Vidal to Scott and back to Coventry, and the old shorter standby:  up Ponce to Ponce Place thru Clairemont Heights and back to Ponce via Northern.
