Pharmhouse Restaurant Takes Place of Caribbean Harry’s

Decatur Metro | September 9, 2009

InDecatur reports that Caribbean Harry’s is gone and that former Sage chef Wayne Hamilton has already opened the Pharmhouse Restaurant in its place.  For more details (like a menu and the origin of the name) along with interior pics, click over to InDecatur.

Dave calls it a “soft opening”, but I’d say its been downright covert!

Emory’s Upcoming Arts Season

Decatur Metro | September 9, 2009

Someone must have told Emory about my soft spot.  Refer to me as an “editor” or “reporter” and I’ll post pretty much ANYTHING!

Just kidding, this is good stuff.

Emory University 2009-2010 Arts Season Highlights:

* Fall 2009 – Science and art projects: Hominid, a new science play co-written by NY playwright Ken Weitzman based on the true story captured by Emory professor and Yerkes Center primatologist Frans de Waal, Ph.D., in Chimpanzee Politics, directed by Emory alumna Ariel de Man of Atlanta’s Out of Hand Theater; and two evolution-themed collaborations with Emory scientist David Lynn (debut of choreographer David Neumann’s new work that looks at evolution, Big Eater; and Lelavision’s new performance art involving movement, sound, and visual elements)

* Emory Visual Arts Gallery – The Lucid Eye: A Year of Photography at Emory, 2009-2010, a series of exhibitions curated by Emory’s Jason Francisco that consider key issues in contemporary photography. Included are solo exhibitions of work by Joel Leivick, Dawoud Bey, and Ruth Dusseault, as well as an inaugural show of 20th-century masterworks by 19 photographers from the collection of the Atlanta, Georgia law firm of Arnall Golden Gregory, and a juried exhibition (call for entries open to the public now) of photographic images that explore the theme of “home.”

McMARTA

Decatur Metro | September 9, 2009

Dear Transit Rider,

I bet that long walk to MARTA this morning made you somethin’ hungry, huh?

I bet as you stepped onto that brown-tiled platform you were mighty jealous of all those car commuters who could just pull up to a window, hand over a couple dollars, and graze freely from that brown paper bag, huh?

Well drool-jealous no more hapless rail commuter/untapped consumer!  McDonald’s has heard your cries of hunger pain and wishes to level the commuter playing field!

The fast-food chain’s “Try Free, Ride Free” event, which rewards public transit riders in six U.S. cities with free transit rides and free Angus Third-Pounders, starts September 13th!

Still no word on McDonald’s opening locations in rail stations, so for now after your first free taste, I guess you’ll still need to hoof it across that freeway on-ramp to get your grease fix.

But hey at least in the future, when you think “transit”, you’ll also think “beef”.

Winnona Park Car Thief Caught

Decatur Metro | September 9, 2009

Recent car thief victim, Allison, writes in to report that the thief who had been stealing from unlocked cars in the Winnona Park in the last week or so, has been caught.

Last evening I received a call from Sgt. Jennifer Ross of the Decatur Police. They arrested a man yesterday afternoon for the thefts occurring throughout our neighborhood this week and last. The arrest was based on serial numbers of items taken, which were reported. Sgt. Ross ran them against a database of serial numbers from pawn shops, and lo and behold, our thief had attempted to pawn the items. So he was arrested and will be prosecuted.

Sgt. Ross also said that the reports of entered autos—even in the cases where nothing or items of little value were taken—will help the prosecutors in their case against him.

Hats off to Decatur Police Department—this is community policing at its best!

Hats off indeed.
