Equal time rules demand a McCain/Palin rally in Decatur too.
Would anyone show up at a McCain/Palin rally on the Decatur Square? I mean other than protestors….

What a joke…how many splintered groups do you need for one cause?
JohnD you must not be moving around Decatur neighborhoods much these days. Quite a few McCain Palin yard signs. Different than past elections when a Republican sign was rarity in Decatur.
Thus far I’ve seen zero McCain signs in Decatur. Marietta is a different story.
I do get around quite a bit in Decatur, Fifi, and I’ve yet to see a McCain sign of any kind. I would expect a few in Avondale Estates, because they are pretty skilled at resisting change. All joking aside, I wonder what the breakdown of Dems and Republicans really is in the city limits of Decatur? Has anyone seen numbers? I live and work in Decatur proper and never see any Republican bumper stickers nor yard signs. Yet, there have to be some Republicans here. Does anyone know the numbers?
Some McCain signs have been popping up in Oakhurst. I assumed there’d be greater numbers north of the tracks but maybe it’s just an indicator of just how much Oakhurst has changed in that past 10-15 years.
I saw one on Vidal yesterday. Says something that it stood out to me.
there’s a mccain sign on avery in winnona park.
On Lamont and Vidal, I counted at least 8 McCain Palin signs this weekend plus several car bumper stickers. The friends I visited on Lamont commented on the shift in political affiliation on that street – used to be solidly democrat.
One more thing – I don’t mean to make any judgments here. I am just responding to the earlier comment questioning who in Decatur would attend a McCain rally on the square. We shouldn’t simply assume everyone in Decatur shares the same political views.
There we have it. Lamont and Vidal are the hotbeds of Republican Decatur. Thanks for the feedback. In a funny way, you have to feel bad for the other closeted Republicans out there who would love to McCain up their front yard, but are scared of the dirty looks from neighbors.
Putting a McCain sign in a Decatur yard is like putting an Obama sign in an Alpharetta yard. Decatur leans overwhelmingly Democrat. Alpharetta leans overwhelmingly Republican. Take a look at the numbers on November 5th. So if you want to stick out like a sore thumb in Decatur, please, by all means put a McCain sign in your yard. For me personally, I don’t use my yard or my bumper to advertise my political beliefs.
I’ve actually run the numbers on Decatur voting trends in the past 4 big statewide elections. The verdict: Decatur was and remains a 75-80% Democratic bastion with no signs of anything changing, despite the fact there are a few outspoken conservatives among us with like to go against the grain and put signs in their yards.

Thank you, Decatur Guy, for the numbers. You are a real mensch.
I believe I saw a McCain sign on W Hill. I also saw one last week on Sycamore in Decatur Heights, perhaps adjacent to a Chambliss one.
there’s a McCain sign on Mead Rd., up the street from Oakhurst Elem. I also saw several on Superior (?) in Great Lakes.
All,
Decatur will always be solidly Democrat with the high African American population. Nothing you can do about it.
Unless all the tenured Emory residents moved out.
Higher than average African American population, a higher than average female population, a higher than average gay population (zip code 30030 has the highest % of same sex couple households in Georgia according to the census), higher than average education levels, etc. are all factors that contribute.
I’m not a huge McCain fan, particularly since he’s chosen some hee haw for VP and it was a blatant and irresponsible move to get votes rather than taking into consideration what is best for this country.
I saw a documentary recently called “Why We Fight” that puts McCain in a relatively favorable light…I’m not certain whats happened to him these days…sold his soul to the extremist Christian right I guess. This documentary was made a few years ago and discusses the highly dangerous and acclerating emergence of the military industrial complex…corporate contractors in sync with the military and congress. It was first brought to the attention of the American public during President Dwight Eisenhower’s farewell speech back in the 60’s. Its a balanced eye opener that I would highly recommend. Dare I say this system that is in place could some day turn on us if not kept in check. They have it on Netflix or at the video store….check it out.

Way to drag a fun conversation down into the muck of actual politics Rick. It’s interesting to see how a community evolves and I was enjoying the rather light, open discussion where neither side was made to feel under attack. But, apparently you felt the need to make sure we all know that you think McCain has ‘sold out’ to the ‘extreme Christian right’ (who is that exactly?) and that Palin is a ‘hee haw’.
Let’s just stick to the facts (ala Decaturguy) on this particular post and save the condescending arguments and conspiracy theories for another day.
Robbie C…its a blog and if you read through the thread again..its not all light. As far as our worldview, some of us are light…and some are heavy. All are needed. As DecaturGuy pointed, statistically one of the largest block of people voting for Senator Obama have higher than average educational levels. Why is that?? Perhaps more education potentially brings on more ‘AWARENESS’? (the old cliche..ignorance is bliss? I think many people choose to take comfort in this cliche. But maybe its opposite? Maybe ignorance is evil?) After seeing the documentary that I mentioned above, I actually had second thoughts about McCain and was considering voting for him. But I am closely watching what he has to say as of late and it is not the same person. I don’t know why that is other than he’s giving in to some powerful interest. Given the recent talk of the financial crisis, there hasn’t been much discussion that much of the economy is also sitting on the house of cards that is pouring billions into the defense industry aka: military industrial complex. Its almost considered un-Patriotic to point out how dangerous this could potentially be, plus our attention is continually being diverted by entertainment media, wedge issues like abortion, gay marriage, religion, etc. and this so called ‘defense’ system is expotentially getting larger….a system that ultimately needs to continue to create wars to feed itself. Sometimes people choose not to look at reality either because its too scary, or again, we are being too diverted by divisions that are being manufactured and its easy to call it a ‘Conspiracy’ to supress the reality of what is happening. But the reality will end up on everyone’s doorstep if people don’t start looking at it. Our govt is a projection of us. We are each responsible for this system thats being created and its mostly a projection of fear. Billions and billions of dollars are going into this thing and its not making us safer….actually its probably going to make us alot less safe.
I apologize for my hee haw comment about Palin. She is being sheltered and we cannot truly judge her credentials. This is blasphemy. She could potentially hold extremely fascist views and she has the potential to become President. Have we not learned anything from history?? I noted once that she has never traveled anywhere outside the US except for a 1 week vacation to Mexico and to Kuwait to visit the Alaskan National Guard (which is essentially America in Kuwait) When I asked how she could possibly understand the implications of her decisions on the world (and even when she does start traveling the world in her role should she get it, she will be in an exectutive bubble). I said the world needs more understanding and compassion…now more than ever. I was called “Liberal! People in Pakistan will kill you..etc etc Liberal!” I actually thought my comment would be viewed as quite Christian by someone that labels themself as a Christian but it wasn’t understood because of fear.
And as far as the extremist Christian right…they have a huge hand in policy. Its no secret at all. Any group that chooses to form whether its a group of Christians, a group of Republicans, a womens group, a fascist group, a group of homosexuals, a group of athiests, a sewing club group, whatever…any formed group by the nature of forming itself has attached a label to itself and should automatically be held up to scrutiny. The paradoxical thing is that some people view member of this group as being good…and understandably so from a rational perpective…if you take into context what Christianity is really about…but these extremists are not good…they are the one’s calling much of society immoral…and I think its them trying to divert our collective attention from the fact that they are the most immoral of all.
I still highly recommend this non-partisan, very interesting, and very balanced documentary.

Rick, don’t apoligize for your hee-haw comment. Sarah Pitbull is a redneck and so is their whole family. If you don’t believe it ask the Palins themselves, or you can even look at her kids Myspace pages. Those pages are full of AK-47 jokes and redneck apherisms. Bristol Pitbull’s boyfriend even admits his redness on his Myspace page that he is a “redneck and proud of it.” Sarah Pitbull was the mayor of a town with one of the highest Meth rates, teen pregnancy, and high school drop out rates in the country. And she is a part of that community with her views reflecting and reinforcing that kind of nonsense. Calling her Hee-haw is actually not that bad of an insult because at least hee-haw was funny and somewhat innocent. She’s definitely more TPT (trailor park trash) than hee-haw. Maybe Sarah and Michael Vick could meet at Bad Newz kennels for a lovely evening of pitbull fighting.
I’m more concerned with her being a fascist than a redneck.
What is the problem with asking this woman questions???

ABC News reports that all of the networks are objecting to the John McCain campaign’s attempt to get photographs of Sarah Palin at the U.N., but no news coverage: Update: The networks have just voted to BAN any use of the photographs/video in protest.

I love it when anything that does not go the left’s way this day is “fascist”.
Bush is a fascist, McCain is a fascist, everyone is a fascist…..its nice that you can use one word to denigrate anyone who disagrees with you.
God, Rick, you’re such a fascist.
Nothing wrong with “transparency” in electing senior government officials…aye? My note was an inquiry not a statement.
If you are trying to get me worked up by slandering me…it bounced off.
The following is an email I sent to my family this morning. If this defines someone who would be considered a fascist…so be it. Have a great weekend all. I’m done with this thread.

I was doing hospice volunteer work yesterday and Harold Woodley my new 103 year old friend died last night. I went over after work and he was not feeling very well…he was periodically vomiting. I met his niece, Joanie, on her way out the door for the evening..she said that he had not been feeling well all day and the doctor who was there earlier advised prune juice and some drug concoction. There was a nurses aid in the house when I arrived who was schedule to be there until 9:30pm and the TV’s were blaring everywhere. I turned off the TV in his room and turned down the TV in the living room. I sat with him and helped try to talk him through regulating his breathing in hopes that calming him down might settle his stomach a bit. His pain seemed to go in waves and eventually started to get progressively worse. I told the aid to call the hospice and I called his niece and told her to come back as he could not stay by himself after the aid left. The niece came back and one of the hospice nurses shortly followed. She gave him a small dose of morphine and a suppository for the nausea and hooked him up to oxygen. He was pretty alert the whole time even when the morphine kicked in. At one point he said “I’m 103 and this is my life.” Even through all that he had a bit of a dry sense of humor. I could tell he was exhausted and was in and out but couldn’t sleep soundly. He kept telling me he was sorry I was seeing him in that condition. No problem man, I said, we all get sick. At around 9:45 when it looked like he was going to sleep I decided to leave. I walked out with his niece (she was going out for a cigarette) and got down to the lobby and realized I had forgotten my sweater. I went back upstairs into his room to get it and he was calling out and the aid and nurse could not hear him in the next room. I sat down with him and held his hand and he kept saying I’m ready to go, I’m ready to go. So I held his hand and wiped his brow and told him that it was ok to let go that he would be ok…its ok man…its ok…just let go..its ok…its ok. He was trying to say hail mary’s but he was having a hard time breathing (which is why he kept waking up). I sat with him for another 45 mins and the nurse came in and gave him some more morphine as per her schedule to try to calm him and used some type of respiratory tool to help get his airwaves opened. He seemed to calm down and fade out again around 11. I told Joanie I would come by this morning and work from the apt if she needed a break or after work..whatever she needed. After I went to bed, Joanie called and left a msg at midnight last night telling me that he died right after I left.
I only got to spend a few sessions with him….when I went there last night I brought a pad of paper because I was going to ask him alot of questions about his life and do some writing. I was really looking forward to spending time with him and hearing more about his life…the couple of hours that I spent with him last Sunday were amazing. As life would have it, that didn’t happen as I expected. But I am so deeply honored to have spent the last few hours of Harolds life with him. He was really an amazing guy.
Cut it out guys and gals. Even if you find insult-a-thons therapeutic, please refrain from penning one here.
