Decatur UDO Idea #1: R-50 Residential District

Decatur Metro | January 9, 2014

There are many changes/updates being considered as part of the Unified Development Ordinance process, many of which were reviewed in a public meeting last night.  If you couldn’t make the meeting, you can check out this DecaturNext recap.  Over the next few days, DM will highlight the various changes being considered so no one is surprised once the UDO is completed later this year.  First up – R:50!

One part of the Unified Development Ordinance process is create new and updated zoning districts to “reflect the character of the existing residential and neighborhood commercial areas, or that serve an unmet need identified in the 2010 Strategic Plan.”  What is it? Why? and Where?  Here’s the answer straight from the presentation…

  • WHAT IS IT? Allows 50 feet wide lots and includes urban design requirements so new houses are in harmony with the character of neighborhoods.
  • WHY? Much of the traditional residential fabric of Decatur is zoned R-60, although many lots are 50 feet wide. This new district would reflect the character of these older lots.
  • WHERE? Proactively mapped by the City or applied for by neighborhoods.

Taste Closes in Decatur and Reopens at Phipps Plaza

Decatur Metro | January 9, 2014

Bo sent along this note from the folks at Taste on Church Street…

Dear Friends:

We hope you had a happy and healthy holiday season, and are looking forward to a great 2014!

We wanted to let you know that we have closed closed the Decatur Taste store this week, but we are happy to be well ensconced at Phipps Plaza, on the second floor above Tiffany’s. All of our holiday items are on sale, including our artisan flour sack towels, gourmet chocolates and hot chocolates, hot toddy mixes and other gourmet items.

We’ve got some great events coming up in in the next 2 months, and will be back in touch when those dates and time are firmed up.

Stay warm, and best to all! Hope to see you soon at Phipps!

Best,

Marcy

Tin Drum Moves From Emory Village to North Druid Hills Road

Decatur Metro | January 9, 2014

A new post on Tomorrow’s News Today reminded me that my wife had mentioned to me over the weekend that Tin Drum in Emory Village looked to be closed.  (I wonder what else I’ve forgotten that she’s told me recently!)  Anyway, according to TNT, Tin Drum will move north a bit…

Wisely choosing not to leave the intown Emory area completely, Tin Drum will reopen in a new location, about 3.5 miles away, at 2566 Briarcliff Road.  The new location is in a new center, the Village at Druid Hills.  Tin Drum will join Willy’s Mexicana Grill (expected to open in May) and Newk’s Eatery (opening timetable unknown) as dining options in the center.   A freestanding Mattress Firm and in-line Sprint store have already opened and will soon be joined by a nail salon and Sport Clips hair salon.
