Decatur City Commission Tables Proposed Tree Ordinance

Decatur Metro | January 21, 2014

After hours of public comment and discussion by the commission, the Decatur City Commission voted 4-1 (with Mayor Baskett casting the only “nay” vote) this evening to table the tree ordinance until early March.

The vote included noting that they planned to accept revisions to some of the numbers that have been much discussed here over the past few days – the 55% coverage, the 10% lot coverage, the $1.50 a square foot cost.  The Commission stated that they had asked staff lower all of these figures prior to the meeting.

We can go into further detail on these tomorrow.  Or if anyone wants to report out more details in the comments, go for it.

Downtown Decatur’s Status as a “Great Neighborhood” Called Out in USA Today

Decatur Metro | January 21, 2014

This is pretty cool.  Yvette sent along this photo via Twitter of a page from USA Today recommending the American Planning Association list of “great neighborhoods” to business travelers.  As was initially announced back in October, Downtown Decatur was featured on the APA’s list last October.

Here’s the article that went along with the list, if you’re interested.

Hillyer/East Howard Townhomes Seek Residential Use in Commercial Zone Approval

Decatur Metro | January 21, 2014

Another item of note on tonight’s Decatur City Commission agenda.  The developer of the already-approved 24 townhomes on the west side of Hillyer Place and East Howard is requesting residential use in a commercial zoning district to expand the project across Hillyer on the current site of a vacant industrial building.

According to the project application, the project would consist of 11 townhomes that all face the street with two car garage parking in the rear and 6 foot wide sidewalks.

According to the staff report included with the application, the applicant is seeking the following exceptions for the project…

  • Residential Use in a Commercial District
  • Lifecycle Density Bonus
  • Exceptions to the HDSF Design Standards
  • Exceptions to the Special Pedestrian Area Requirements

You can read the full details of each requested exception in the staff report.  (It’s all a bit more complex than the summarized list above suggests.) The Decatur Planning Commission recommended approval of the plan in their January meeting earlier this month.
