Saw one of these walk across our front lawn on Geneva Street a few years ago. It wandered into the neighbor’s yard before disappearing into the bushes.
We live on College Ave. Several years ago, (before Decatur Metro) my wife and a neighbor found a deer in our back yard. It was all nevous on being trapped in a fenced area but eventually jumped the fence and disappeared.
Yes, there was a family wandering around in the neighborhood around Emory Circle or one of those streets. From what I recall, they were seen pretty regularly, too.
Thanks. I used to wonder how long they would make it – being so close to traffic. Has anyone seen them recently? Between traffic and now coyotes, I’d be surprised.
No they’re all gone now. Although I have some pictures from back in the day of them and if I can find them I’ll post them. I have vivid memories of looking out my second floor bathroom window and being eye to eye with a turkey perched on top of my deck umbrella.
At one time there where 12 or 13 roaming around the Emory side of Druid Hills.
I live on Emory Circle and moved in around ’07. There were still 6+ at that time and the big Tom roosted on the roof of the house next door. I think they were all gone by ’09 but maybe a little earlier. I would often have to shoo them from my car door to get in. It was interesting. Rumor had it that a house on N. Decatur near the Clairmont intersection would feed them and they showed up regularly. Then when the next cluster home development bought the property, they started wandering the area. I’ve no idea if that’s true.
Yep, there was a tom (male), affectionately named Horace, who used to wander among the houses on the golf-course side of Clifton in Druid Hills a few years back. And with a few hens, too, I believe, in tow. I saw him myself in one of the driveways and almost wrecked my car rubber-necking. I later Googled this Druid Hills turkey and read that one of the homeowners had to run outside one day to persuade their lawn service to stop chasing Horace… she was afraid he might end up on a dinner plate that night.
Pretty sure you are mistaken. Peahens and peacocks both have a crest, and their plumage is more colorful all over (not just the males’ tail feathers). I know for a fact there are turkeys in Oakhurst.
The is/was a house along the RR tracks, sort of across the tracks from the Y that had a turkey farm of sorts. You’d see the turkeys on various streets at various times. We moved to Decatur in ’07 so I can’t speak to whether it’s still there.
In the early 2000’s they went through a period where they coverged in my yard on Clifton Rd near Oxford everyday around 5pm and waddle accross the street to roost in a large oak tree. I have no idea why we were “chosen”. You knew the time by the sound of slowing cars and honking horns. That was also the signal for our dog Guinness to go absofreakin turkey-crazy.
My favorite silly memory of this was the lady who came to the door, pushy & agitated, asking if “those” were my turkeys. I said no, ” they just show up here” and her reply was “well they’re blocking traffic, can you put them in your fence?” ( I guess she didn’t know that turkeys fly)
While Guinness was slobbering with anticipation, I looked up and noticed her minivan blocking the street. I said, pointing at her car and grinning, “actually I don’t don’t think it’s *these* turkeys that are blocking the street…”
She stomped off the porch and back to her car. Heheheh.

Once they figure out we don’t have many camouflaged snipers looking for lunch, I bet we’ll see plenty.

Wasn’t there a herd of them living in some shrubbery along N.Decatur on the stretch between Clair(e)mont and Clifton? Maybe like five years ago?

Make way for drumsticks?
Coyote chow!
Darn. When I saw the title of the thread I thought we were back to talking whiskey.
Have been seeing & hearing them around Oakhurst for at least 4-5 years. They kick up enough fuss late at night to become annoying sometimes.
I hereby retract my comment that it is rare to see wild turkeys this far inside the perimeter.
Still, rare for me, at least.
Cheers to all of metro Atlanta’s wild turkeys!

Season opened on Saturday. Grab your bow, starve a coyote.
Coyotes like kitteh. Want to starve a coyote? Keep your cats inside.

Not a turkey. Probably a peacock. Or peahen. (Peacocks don’t come out with those gorgeous tail feathers until the weather warms.)
I suspect this because I saw the same animal near Winter Ave. a few weeks ago.

Are we back to the best bourbon thread?
True, factual, turkey-in-Druid Hills History:

Great story! I had no idea about the turkeys. The “lady” must have been pretty worked up to abandon her minivan and bang on your door. Geez.
I saw a turkey this morning in the North DeKalb Mall community garden.
