Paul Simon Has the Flu

Decatur Metro | February 8, 2013

Lynne points to this note on Emory’s website…

The highly anticipated Richard Ellmann Lectures in Modern Literature by Paul Simon, set for Feb. 10-12 at Emory University, have been postponed due to illness. Simon’s representatives report he has the flu.

Emory anticipates being able to reschedule the lectures at a later time, to be announced. People interested in attending the Ellmann Lectures will have to re-register for complimentary tickets when the new dates are announced. Owing to scheduling uncertainties at this time, existing tickets will not be honored for the new dates.

The latest information and updates will be available at: http://www.emory.edu/ellmann

DeKalb Medical Center Area Receives Livable Centers Grant

Decatur Metro | February 8, 2013

Deanne points out that the latest Atlanta Regional Commission press release regarding the latest round of Livable Centers Initiative grants includes a good chuck of money ($120,000) for a study focusing on the area around DeKalb Medical.  Here’s the description from the release…

This study focuses on the area around DeKalb Medical Center and will plan for redevelopment of underutilized and vacant properties to create a variety of housing options and an appropriate mix of commercial, office and retail. The study will incorporate Lifelong Communities concepts and the establishment of a “wellness district” for the DeKalb Medical Center area. Additionally, the plan will address sidewalk and bicycle facilities along the major corridors in the area to create a more walkable center and to improve connections to MARTA bus routes and Emory’s Cliff shuttle.

The Cookie Studio Moving to Buckhead

Decatur Metro | February 8, 2013

From Tomorrow’s News Today…

The Cookie Studio, currently located on East College Avenue near the Avondale MARTA station, will soon close and move to Pharr Road in Buckhead. The Cookie Studio will open in the Pharr Road space most recently occupied by Fuoco di Napoli, a Antico Pizza-like pizzeria that closed this past October after less than a year in business. Rumors have swirled about why the restaurant failed with some saying that litigation from Giovanni Di Palma of Antico Pizza regarding “intellectual property-trademark” forced the restaurant to close.

Atlanta Business Chronicle Reports Large Scale Calloway Project

Decatur Metro | February 8, 2013

calloway

It’s no secret that there has long been an interest in turning the Calloway Building site (home of the Maloof Auditorium, a huge sloping parking lot, and some quality barbwire fencing) into a high-density, mixed use development.  And in the past year or so, there have been rumblings on and off that the County was finally willing to sell.

Now, according to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the County could vote on the project as early as next month.  The full article is behind a paywall, but the key points include…

  • Cousins Properties, who didn’t comment for the article, would be the developer of the mixed-used project
  • DeKalb could vote as early as February 12th to sell the site to the city and then the city would potentially work with Cousins to redevelop the site

I don’t think it’s too dramatic a statement to say that such a development would go far and redefining Trinity Avenue as the city’s second Main Street, something the city continues to strive towards with the redevelopment of Allen Wilson Terrace and Beacon Hill, along with the longer-term idea of extending Fairview Ave through from Ponce to Trinity.
