More Crane!

Decatur Metro | February 7, 2013

img-130202-7 (1)

Eye on the Street purists will call me out if I title this post by that name, but I really enjoyed Gwyneth’s alternative picture of THE crane (the first pic was posted last Saturday as an EOTS) so here it is with a title that gives off mild aromatics of “More Cowbell”.

(And if you aren’t familiar with the “More Cowbell” reference, there’s a big, dang Wikipedia entry for it.)

Creative Loafing Heaps High Praise – and Expectation – on Three Taverns Brewery

Decatur Metro | February 7, 2013

CL’s big feature is week is “Georgia’s Brewed Awakening“, an extensive piece on the challenges and promise of Georgia’s emerging brew-scene.  Decatur’s Blue Tarp Brewing and Ale Yeah! both receive worthy mentions, but it’s Three Taverns that gets the star treatment.   Here’s a sampling of what’s written…

Amid this burgeoning group of beer purveyors, Athens’ Creature Comforts and Decatur’s Three Taverns will likely define the Georgia brewing conversation over the next decade. Stein’s Creature Comforts will initially produce an IPA, pilsner, and a Berliner Weisse (a gently tart, low-alcohol, German wheat beer). For Brian Purcell’s Three Taverns, the focus is on a Belgian IPA and a Belgian-style single to start.

…One painstakingly crafted selection that may lead Georgia’s craft-brewing direction by example is Three Taverns’ Quasimodo. This Belgian-style quadruple ale, which Purcell has been tweaking for six years, will be the brewery’s dark, boozy winter seasonal. …Purcell’s careful attention to detail and restless, perfectionist spirit should be a model for Georgia’s craft-beer community going forward.

Fugees Raising Money for a New Bus

Decatur Metro | February 7, 2013

Hailey writes in this note to DM…

Y’all have been so supportive of Fugees Family in the past, we’re hoping we can get you involved in our Valentine’s Day project too! A post of any kind about the project would be hugely helpful.

As you know, we’ve work with refugee students in Clarkston, GA for the past seven years. Each year we add more and more students to our programs, and in turn, each year transportation becomes more and more of an issue. During the summer, we equip kids with bikes and ride into Decatur. During the school year, students use bikes and walk as much as possible. But at night, after soccer practice and tutoring, it just isn’t safe for us to send them walking home. So, for the past few years, we have been shuttling them home in our 14 passenger bus. This year we have 136 Fugees and it takes a staff member almost two hours to run the shuttle to get all the students home.

For Valentine’s Day, we’re asking supporters to show the Fugees some love by donating $100 toward helping us get a new bus! Each of the 500 generous donors that make this project possible will have their name printed on the back of the bus as a thank you, as well as to remind the Fugees of all the people who support them in achieving their dreams.

Below is the email that Luma sent to our supporters, please feel free to use any or all of the information.

Decatur Named One of Georgia’s “Renaissance Cities”

Decatur Metro | February 7, 2013

ponce

Georgia Trend magazine recently asked the Georgia Municipal Association to help them identify some of Georgia’s “most successful downtown revitalizations”.

From the initial list provided, Georgia Trend chose to highlight eight downtown areas in their February issue: Blue Ridge, Columbus, Dahlonega, Decatur, Hinesville, Roswell, Savannah and Statesboro.

Here’s a snippet of the Decatur write up from the article…

The city of Decatur could give a clinic on downtown revitalization. Since the early 1980s, the city’s leaders, business owners and citizens have worked diligently to create Decatur’s small-town atmosphere with a big-city buzz. “We did a town center plan around 1982,” says Bill Floyd a longtime mayor and city commissioner. “That’s when the vision of this community started. If you go back and look at that plan, you’ll see that what’s happened in Decatur is basically what’s in the plan.”
