Development Updates: Mural Coming To Arlo Parking Deck, Bike Lanes Coming to Commerce

    Decatur Metro | April 7, 2016 | 10:23 am

    commercepano

    From this month’s Decatur Focus…

The streetscape construction around the Arlo development should wrap up by the end of this month, allowing for pedestrian and bicycling access again. The ground floor retail space will then be turned over to the tenants for interior build out.

The sidewalk elevations and streetscape improvements might look a bit odd for a few months. They are being constructed to match elevation changes planned as part of the intersection improvement at the railroad crossing, which is scheduled to start later this year. We are also working with the developer to select an artist to create a mural on the south side of the parking deck, facing College Avenue and the railroad tracks.

The Alexan apartment development on Commerce Drive began leasing last month. The developer is installing bicycle lanes as part of a larger street improvement plan along the Commerce Drive corridor.

How the Netherlands Does Bike Lanes

    Decatur Metro | August 9, 2012 | 12:15 pm

We’ve received a couple of interesting cycling pics from overseas recently.  Here’s the first from Angelika with this description…

…with all the recent talk of bike lanes, thought I would send in a pic of a local street in Aalsmeer (near Amsterdam). Bike lanes in The Netherlands are always red brick. When no bikes are present cars can ride side by side encroaching into the bike lanes (as seen in the distance). When a bike is present, the car must stay behind the bike unless it is safe to pass (no oncoming traffic). Makes for very alert and conscientious road users. Can’t help but wonder how the traffic to and from Fifth Ave school would change if one of the local roads looked like this…

A “Bike Box” and Restriping Proposed for West Ponce

    Decatur Metro | February 21, 2011 | 3:25 pm

Another item on tomorrow night’s Decatur City Commission meeting agenda: a $38,000 change-order to make changes to the West Ponce de Leon/Trinity car and bike lanes.

Here’s a rundown of the additions/alterations being proposed to the City Commission in a letter from Deputy City Manager Hugh Saxon (pg. 28 of the meeting materials)…

    • “Bike Box” at West Ponce and West Trinity Place: $11,000
    • Re-striping of West Ponce between Trinity & Pinetree: $5,100
    • Changing material used to stripe bike lanes from paint to a “more durable thermoplastic”: $5,600
    • Misc, signing sand cleanup: $3,800
    • Additional paving materials needed for milled portion of  West Ponce: $8,500
    • Contingency: $4,000

According to Saxon’s letter, funds are available in the approved project budget to pay for these additional expenses.

West Ponce/Trinity Bike Lane Construction To Begin Soon

    Decatur Metro | September 11, 2010 | 10:39 am

With the Decatur City Commission’s approval of a $450,000 budget to construct bike lanes along West Trinity Avenue and the very western portion of West Ponce de Leon Avenue Tuesday night, Assistant City Manager Hugh Saxon tells DM that construction should begin in the next 30-45 days, and the project will take up to 120 days to complete.

Mr. Saxon recently summarized the work being done in a letter (page 27) to City Manager Peggy Merriss as such…

    • West Trinity Place between North McDonough Street and Commerce Drive – A bike lane in each direction with 2 vehicle lanes in each direction.
    • West Trinity Place between Commerce Drive and West Ponce de Leon Avenue – A bike lane in each direction with 1 vehicle lane in each direction and on-street parking along the south side of West Trinity Place.
    • West Ponce de Leon Avenue between West Trinity Place and the western city limits – The plan also provides traffic calming elements.  There is a reduction from 2-vehicle lanes to 1 vehicle travel lane in each direction, with a bike lane in each direction, “bulb outs” with crosswalks at intersections , and on-street parking permitted on both sides of the street.  The bulb outs  will use 8-inch high ceramic channel markers.  When additional funding is available, the bulb outs will be rebuilt with curbing and landscaping.
